SUMMARY
The position of SBA Loan Underwriter is primarily responsible for underwriting government supported loan programs, to include SBA (Small Business Administration) and USDA (United State Department of Agriculture), as defined by the Bank, and submitting loan applications for approval. The underwriter is responsible to ensure eligibility/qualification of the loan, borrowers and/or guarantors. All loans are underwritten in a manner to ensure compliance with SBA SOP, First Bank SBA loan policy, along with State and Federal Regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Underwrite quality government program (SBA and USDA) loan applications to comply with SBA guidelines, bank policy and industry best practices.
- Knowledge and familiarity with SBA SOP, SBA procedural notices, SBA loan structuring, and SBA eligibility requirements and documentation.
- Review of file documentation for new loan requests including completion of SBA credit memo for submission for approval and completion of accurate financial spreads including SBA cash flow.
- Utilize independent judgement to assess & manage risk by identifying primary risks, issues and mitigating factors regarding extensions of credit.
- Review all applicable transaction documents, follow-up for outstanding information needed for underwriting, analyze business and guarantor information, assess the viability of collateral, review business plans and projections, review credit and due diligence reports for acceptability, and indicate additional information needed to support your recommendation for approval or declination.
- Prepare loan request credit package for underwriting assignment assignments, which includes but not limited to, credit memorandum, cash flow analysis, collateral document reviews, confirm adequacy of the due diligence reports, review final third-party report reports/reviews, and identify required closing conditions to ensure loans are appropriately structured and meet credit requirements for lending quality and compliance as determined by government agency guidelines and/or Bank’s Credit Policy.
- Partner with SBA Business Development Officers, SBA Loan Underwriters, SBA Loan Processors, Credit Officers & Department Managers in managing SBA loan pipeline.
- Communicate with prospective borrowers to facilitate sound independent underwriting of prospective projects. Collaborate with SBA Business Development Officers to develop acceptable loan structures prior to formal submission to Credit Administration.
- Maintains a professional and technical knowledge by studying all relevant SBA SOP’s, USDA regulations, attending seminars and educational workshops
- Completes annual compliance courses.
- Adheres specifically to all corporate policies and procedures. Also adheres to Federal and State regulations and laws; including, the Bank Secrecy Act and the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
- Adheres to all levels of our Service Excellence standards.
- Performs other duties as required.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge & Experience: These specifications are general guidelines based on the minimum experience normally considered essential to the satisfactory performance of this position. Individual abilities may result in some deviation from these guidelines.
- Knowledge of current SBA policies, procedures, compliance requirements.
- Bachelor's Degree
- 4-5 years of SBA specific underwriting experience preferred.
- 5 years of financial services and business cash flow experience is preferred.
- Has the ability to read and analyze complex business tax returns, personal tax returns, financial statements, and business acquisition and real estate purchase agreements.
- Intermediate knowledge of Bank operations, products and services; related state and federal laws and regulations, and other Bank operational policies and procedures.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills - ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Intermediate skills in computer terminal and personal computer operation; mainframe computer system; word processing, spreadsheet and specialty software programs.
- Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and instruct personnel.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Vision, hearing, speech, dexterity, visual concentration. A valid driver’s license is required. Must have the ability to stand, walk, sit and use hands and fingers. Must have the ability to work the hours and days required to complete the essential functions of the position, as scheduled. The environment is a professional office with standard office equipment.
