Job Summary:
The W/R Facility Mechanical Technician is responsible for performing technical mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement of mechanical equipment related to water/wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, and related facilities. Responsibilities include installing, maintaining, and repairing pumps, motors, hydraulic systems, and other apparatus/equipment in the water/wastewater treatment plants/lift stations; performing regular preventive maintenance inspections; troubleshooting, repairing, and diagnosing parts/equipment; assisting with electrical work; welding metals to fabricate, install, and repair various parts; performing plumbing work to install and repair pipes, valves, and piping system components; inspecting elevated water storage tanks and pumping stations; servicing chlorinators; maintaining records of preventive maintenance and repairs; and driving/operating vehicles in performing work assignments. The position operates under general supervision and requires extended hours, weekend, and on-call/call-back availability.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to safety rules; operates and maintains assigned equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Maintains a 98% or greater attendance percentage average for four quarters of the performance review period.
  • Carries out directions and completes assignments in acceptable time frames.
  • Effectively supports co-workers in establishing and achieving objectives.
  • Manages personal time, schedules, and deadlines.
  • Communicates ideas and information for improving production, procedures, and cost control.
  • Coordinates time off with immediate supervisor to minimize disruptions.
  • Takes initiative to accomplish goals and demonstrates the ability to learn on the job.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Good knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repair work.
  • Good knowledge of the tools, parts, and methods associated with diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining equipment.
  • Working knowledge of electrical maintenance, repair, installation, and water/wastewater treatment.
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of tools of the trade.
  • Ability to work in confining spaces.
  • Ability to detect mechanical malfunctioning of assigned equipment by testing, sound, observation, and chart readings.
  • Ability to read and follow schematic drawings, blueprints, and written/oral instructions.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited two-year community/technical college with a degree/certification in a related field and a minimum of two years of experience in mechanical maintenance/repair of pumps/motors; OR
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of four years of experience as defined above; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined above.

Special Requirements:

  • Functional Employment Test (FET) required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
  • When employed at the Lift Stations, must obtain a valid North Carolina Class B (CDL) within six months of employment/assignment to the position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.

GRADE 406 $23.29 -$30.68 HOURLY NON-EXEMPT
