Job Summary:

Assists patients in selecting corrective lenses, repairing frames, ordering, disbursing and making adjustments to patient's selections, maintaining inventories and charts and performing other office duties.

Job Duties:

Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.  Obtains accurate case history on the patient and relays information to the optometrist. Evaluates the patient's habitual eyeglasses condition by examining frames and lenses as well as operating the lensometer to obtain optical measurements.  Assists the optometrist in conducting examinations, treatments, and minor procedures.  Prepares examination rooms and verifies cleanliness and stock of supplies.  Ensures needed supplies are ordered.  Prepares materials for procedures. Documents procedures personally performed in the patient's chart.  Assists Optometrist by communicating treatment plans for Optometric conditions.  Assists patients by dispensing contacts and educating the patient in proper wear, care, and handling of the lenses.  Provides assistance in fitting, ordering, dispensing, and repairing corrective lenses and supplies.  Assists in training of new employees and student optometrists.  Attends meetings.  Participates in the development and implementation of quality assurance programs.  Makes suggestions in plans for future needs by observing trends of patients.  Maintains HIPAA compliance and confidentiality at all times and protects all personal health information as it relates to patient data.  Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one year of specialized training or education.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

No additional experience.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT) certification required; or must meet the eligibility requirements for the Certified Paraoptometric Technician Examination as outlined by the American Optometric (AOA) and must obtain CPOT certification within one (1) year of hire and maintain throughout employment.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be able to effectively communicate with people, be able to make decisions and possess knowledge of ocular anatomy, optics, Optometric terminology and the use of instruments.  Must be able to provide a personal vehicle that meets compliance with Cherokee Nation Human Resources Policies and Procedures Chapter II-V Subchapter C, Personal Automobile Insurance Requirements.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).  Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client information.  Must meet and maintain periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS   

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT    

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
