The Purdue for Life Foundation and College of Engineering are seeking a bold, visionary leader to serve as Vice President of Development. This high-impact role offers significant visibility and influence as the chief fundraiser and strategic architect for the philanthropic vision of the College of Engineering.
 
As a key leader within both Purdue for Life and the College, the Vice President will drive major and principal gift strategies, lead a high-performing development team, and collaborate closely with the Dean and senior leadership. Priorities include faculty excellence, student achievement, groundbreaking research, and strategic capital projects.

Responsibilities

The Vice President of Development plays a key role in executing the organization’s fundraising strategy. In collaboration with the Senior Vice President and three additional Vice Presidents, this role is accountable for providing strategic leadership to the unit fundraising teams. This role is accountable for the management, oversight and mentorship of Executive Directors and Senior Directors of Development for select colleges and fundraising units and will provide strategic direction and leadership on management issues and major gift strategy development for those units in addition to advancing the mission of Purdue University.

Fundraising Strategy and Execution
  • Working with the Senior Vice President for Development, establish and maintain university fundraising policies and programs within assigned areas.
  • Execute a comprehensive program to build philanthropic support for colleges, schools, departments, and other selected units of the University and its affiliated organizations.
  • Manage assigned Executive Directors and Senior Directors and serve as advisor to ‎college/school/unit advancement activities.
  • Oversee and provide leadership in planning, organizing, and implementing strategies to increase the level of fundraising for assigned areas and for cross-functional initiatives.
  • Lead special campaign projects as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with provosts, deans and directors to plan and direct major gift and personal solicitation programs.
  • Frequent travel and/or evening and weekend duties are required.
Additional Responsibilities: 
  •  Lead the process for evaluating and prioritizing unit campaign needs.‎
  • Continue to provide central coordination and support for academic units.‎ 
  • Manage unit areas and provide necessary resources, training, motivation, ‎mentoring for each area to be successful.‎ 
  • Emphasize growth at the constituency level of the University’s premier giving ‎clubs, President’s Council and the R.B. Stewart Society.‎ ‎
  • Maintain steady increase in number of donors of all types, (alumni, friends, ‎business, industry, faculty/staff, and foundations).‎ 
  • Emphasize building productive relationships and innovative activities between ‎and among the units and offices of sponsored research.
  • Expand collaboration with academic deans, vice presidents and unit director.
  • Ensure the level of staffing, professional expertise, and operating budget for the ‎PFLF are appropriate to accomplish the university’s short- and long-range goals.‎ 
  • Contribute to a development training and ‎retention plans and continue efforts to diversify the development staff and volunteer base. 
  • Provide leadership support to special focus or mini campaigns approved by the ‎University.  
  • Manage the annual benchmarking process and implement best practices for all areas of ‎development, including ‎ annual, major gift, and planned giving programs and activities.
  • Manage and mentor approximately 25 professional staff representing colleges, ‎schools, departments and units. 
  • Make recommendations to the Senior Vice President regarding hiring, promotions, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • Serve as a major gift officer with a ‎selected portfolio of top donors and prospects.‎ 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of comprehensive university fundraising/campaign management.
  • Effective supervisory, coaching, and ‎‎verbal/written communication skills and organizational ability. 
  • Must be energetic, highly motivated, and able to ensure the ‎‎execution of strategic plans to obtain large gifts.
  • Must be able to interact with stakeholders from a wide range of professional and ‎cultural backgrounds. 
  • Ability to represent the University with tact and diplomacy at all times required.  
  • Strong professional ethics and ‎computer literacy required. 

Required Education, Experience and Benefits Summary

  • Minimum of 7 years professional experience in development/fundraising with proven record of success required.
  • University experience ‎‎preferred.
  • Supervisory/management experience required. 
  • Bachelor's degree required. 
  • Advanced degree preferred.

Job Level: Executive 1
