About the Department

*** Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular Board of Regents (BOR) and Civil Service employees. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Other Conditions:   Casual Hire temporary appointment is expected begin October 2025 or soon thereafter.   Not to exceed 89 days.  

Duties: 

  1. Deliver high-quality guidance on business planning, accounting, marketing, exporting, and technology commercialization
  2. Conduct site visits and tailor sessions to client needs and sophistication levels
  3. Assist with loan and grant applications as needed
  4. Develop and teach training classes, including curriculum creation and event coordination
  5. Organize co-sponsored training events and evaluate participant outcomes
  6. Ensure accurate reporting and data management for client services and training activities
  7. Monitor Center effectiveness and impact on the local business community
  8. Supervise counseling and administrative staff, including performance evaluations and personnel actions
  9. Oversee staff development and compliance with institutional and regulatory policies
  10. Design and implement work plans aligned with the Hawaii SBDC Network Strategic Plan
  11. Represent small business interests through service on boards, committees, and task forces
  12. Conduct outreach and maintain relationships with economic development stakeholders and elected officials
  13. Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain credentials and enhance expertise
  14. Perform other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Business or related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in business assistance consulting, small business management, or managerial business consulting, including supervisory responsibilities; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  2. Knowledge of the principles and requirements of starting and operating a successful small business in Hawaii or the ability to quickly obtain such knowledge.
  3. Excellent communication, teaching, and public speaking skills
  4. Proficiency in financial analysis and business planning
  5. Prior experience in SBDC or similar programs, or successful ownership/management of a high-performing small business
  6. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for site visits and outreach
  7. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and conduct remote work as needed


Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities related to business assistance agency consulting, small business management, or managerial business consulting
  2. Minimum three to six years of experience in office or business administration within a business or service-oriented setting 
  3. Masters degree in Business or related field from an accredited college or university
