Our Healthy Communities program team leads Ecojustice’s work to protect people and the environment from pollution and toxic chemicals, tackle environmental racism, and achieve healthy, livable communities.
About The Role
The Program Director, Healthy Communities plays a key leadership role in advancing Ecojustice’s mission. This position leads strategy and execution for the Healthy Communities program with a focus on litigation, law reform and other program tools to tackle pollution, toxic chemicals, environmental racism, and supporting livable communities. The Director collaborates across program areas, embeds justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and Reconciliation into all aspects of the work, and builds strong relationships with communities, partners, and donors.

Develop and lead the execution of the Healthy Communities program strategy.
Mentor the Healthy Communities Team to build expertise in the program area.
Collaborate with senior leaders at Ecojustice to lead the organization.
Role Responsibilities
Lead Healthy Communities
- Develop and implement program strategy, objectives, and plans
- Advance systemic change in Canadian law and policy through leading program litigation and advocacy strategies
- Guide file development take advantage of program opportunities ensuring alignment with organizational goals and JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) principles
- Approve program projects and present files to the Board
- Collaborate across departments to integrate Healthy Communities work
- Build respectful partnerships with communities, governments, and organizations
- Support donor engagement and fundraising efforts with the Philanthropy team
Leadership Responsibilities
Department & People Leadership
- Recruit and manage direct reports, including mentorship performance and growth planning
- Participate in management support, coaching, mentorship and provide feedback for program team members
- Model a respectful, collaborative, high-impact team culture aligned with Ecojustice’s values
- Collaborate with People & Culture to enhance engagement and team effectiveness
Organizational Leadership
- Contribute to strategic planning and organizational leadership alongside peers
- Report on program outcomes to the Executive Director, staff, and Board
- Help shape organizational policies and represent Ecojustice externally
- Lead development of program practices, structures, and stakeholder engagement
- Oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and financial planning for the program

- Deep expertise in Canadian law and policy related to pollution, toxic waste, and pesticides.
- Scientific knowledge of environmental contaminants (e.g., PFAS, pesticides) and their health/ecological impacts.
- Proven leadership in program or functional area management, including strategic planning and execution.
- Strong team leadership skills, with experience mentoring, recruiting, and managing performance.
- Exceptional communication abilities to translate complex legal and technical concepts for varied audiences.
- Senior-level decision-making skills with an understanding organizational impact and risk management
- Experience in law reform, government relations, and budget oversight.
