The City of Burnaby is recruiting a Building Inspector to perform building inspectional and regulatory work to ensure compliance with the Building, Zoning and Sign by-laws and BC Building Code. The successful candidate may be hired into a Building Inspector 1, Building Inspector 2 or Building Inspector 3 position, depending on their qualifications. This exciting position has ample opportunity for professional development and growth potential from one position to the next within Building Inspection. The work becomes progressively more complex and diverse between the levels with the Building Inspector 1 performing entry-level work, up to the Building Inspector 3 performing work at the full working level. A Building Inspector 1 inspects single and two family building construction. The Building Inspector 2 inspects Part 9 buildings. The Building Inspector 3 inspects Part 3 buildings. Responsibilities include inspecting construction projects for compliance with appropriate bylaws and codes and issuing inspection notices, advising appropriate persons and agencies of construction changes or corrections required; providing technical assistance as required; surveying fire-damaged buildings prior to repair; providing factual evidence in court; and performing related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of grade 12 and graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Building Technology or completion of a recognized carpentry trade apprenticeship. A Building Inspector 1 requires sound experience as a Plan Checker 1 or an equivalent combination of training and experience and successful completion of the BOABC Level 1 Exam (i.e. Qualification) or to be enrolled into Level 1 Building Official-in-Training Program (BOIT) and obtain qualification within 12 months. A Building Inspector 2 requires sound experience as a Plan Checker 2 or Building Inspector 1 and successful completion of the BOABC Level 2 Exam (i.e. Qualification) or to be enrolled into Level 2 Building Official-in-Training Program (BOIT) and obtain qualification within 18 months. A Building Inspector 3 requires considerable experience as a Building Technologist or Building Inspector 2 and successful completion of the BOABC Level 3 Exam (i.e. Qualification) or to be enrolled into Level 3 Building Official-in-Training Program (BOIT) and obtain qualification within 24 months; along with the BOABC qualification, an equivalent combination of training and experience. The position requires a valid BC Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
Pay Rate: Building Inspector 1: $37.58 per hour + 12% in lieu of benefits (2024 Rates)
Building Inspector 2: $40.74 per hour + 12% in lieu of benefits (2024 Rates)
Building Inspector 3: $48.09 per hour + 12% in lieu of benefits (2024 Rates)
Location: City Hall
Hours of work: This is an auxiliary position, hours and shifts are based on operational requirements and do not provide guaranteed hours of work, which may include on-call shifts. Typical shifts are Monday to Friday from 7:30AM – 4:15PM.
