Position Duties

General Application Requirements:

  • A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Qualifying Requirements:

 Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position.  You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show five (5) years of full-time experience in streets maintenance operations.  Two (2) years of this experience must be in a supervisory capacity utilizing computer technology.  (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a high school diploma or equivalency.

  • EQUIVALENCY:  None permitted for this position.  Therefore, no education/training and/or work experience may be substituted toward the qualifying requirements listed above.


Minimum Qualifications

If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s).  You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position.  Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

Other Qualifications

  • Oversees and implements the work of assigned personnel to successfully complete DPW maintenance programs, including street sweeping, pothole patching, and vacant lot cleanup.
  • Coordinates all resources including personnel, equipment and materials needed.
  • Supervises assigned personnel and work teams; evaluates work; coaches work team employees; participates in conflict resolution.
  • Provides and/or coordinates training and/or technical assistance (e.g. staff development, equipment operation, historical knowledge).
  • Recommends and implements approved disciplinary and/or corrective action, completes DAR’s as necessary.
  • Creates and produces information provided by Fleet Telematics, GPS data and the Asset Management System to manage resources (e.g., personnel, equipment, materials, etc.) in the performance, efficiency and cost effectiveness of DPW maintenance programs.
  • Maintains a variety of records, both manually and by computer, including timesheets, inventories, job costs, Asset Management System (aka Cartegraph), etc; prepares accurate reports including progress reports, work orders, etc.
  • Monitors all functions occurring in the City right-of-way to ensure compliance with City specifications.
  • Represents the Department at community meetings in area of responsibility.
  • Functions as the Division Safety Officer, ensuring that all safety policies are posted, clarified, and followed; monitors safety compliance of equipment; adheres to safety standards regarding material handling; responds to emergency situations and safety concerns.
  • Works with other City Departments and outside organizations on special projects and emergency responses.
  • Available evenings, weekends and/or holidays; on call 24 hours for emergencies.
  • Coordinates and supervises the application of pesticides and other chemicals when required; provides technical assistance and ensures that work is performed in accordance with City, departmental and PA Department of Agriculture safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures. 
  • Manages, monitors and plans the materials, equipment and personnel under jurisdiction toward the effective, efficient and economical attainment of program goals, including providing maximum convenience to the public and safety of employees.
  • Manages areas of responsibility in strict accordance with applicable laws, regulations and established policies including union agreements to ensure fair and standardized treatment of employees.
  • Performs activities and functions of related personnel and other related tasks/duties that are assigned or required.
