DESCRIPTION
This position performs field work related to Open Space Land Management and Habitat Restoration. This includes planting, irrigation, invasive species removal, trail construction/maintenance, pruning/vegetation management and general tasks related to natural resource management and farming. The position works directly with contractors, volunteers, partners and other City staff.
DEFINITION
Under immediate (Open Space Maintenance Worker I) or general (Open Space Maintenance Worker II) performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled open space maintenance and habitat restoration duties in the development, maintenance, and repair of native wildlife habitat in open space areas, trails and paths, native planting areas, and other public facilities; to operate a variety of powered and hand equipment; and to participate in the enhancement of the City’s open space areas.

Open Space Maintenance Worker II
Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel
May exercise technical supervision over less experienced Open Space maintenance personnel or volunteers.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Open Space Maintenance Worker I This is the entry level class in the Open Space Maintenance Worker class series. Positions in this class normally perform most of the duties required of the II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and normally exercise less discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits a pattern which has been established and explained before the work is started. Under the flexible staffing concept, positions assigned to the Open Space Maintenance Worker I level may reasonably expect to progress to the Open Space Maintenance Worker II level with training, experience, and satisfactory job performance.
Open Space Maintenance Worker II This is the journey level class in the Open Space Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Open Space Maintenance Worker I class, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience in the maintenance of parks and landscaped areas. Appointment to the higher class requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties for the class and meet the qualification standards for the class. All positions assigned to the class require the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.

Positions at the Open Space Maintenance Worker I level may perform some of these duties and responsibilities in a learning capacity.
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled horticulture, arboriculture and resource management duties in the development, maintenance and repair of City Open Space and other Natural Areas.
- Plant and maintain native trees, shrubs, forbs and grasses.
- Water, weed, trim, renovate, and generally improve habitat areas and other installments.
- Operate a variety of power-driven equipment such as tractors, mowers, forklifts, and loaders.
- Clear brush and remove fire-fuel material, clear trails, parking lots, and other facilities.
- Perform all aspects of Integrated Pest Management including hand-pulling, trimming, mowing, cultivating and application of herbicides.
- Assist with plant selection and site design for new installations.
- May purchase minor supplies and equipment.
- Perform light pruning and small tree care in public access areas.
- Pick up trash and debris as needed, change trash can liners in serviced areas.
- Maintain, upgrade, and install irrigation systems; troubleshoot controllers and electronic valves.
- Drive vehicles used to transport materials, tools, and equipment as required; clean and maintain open space maintenance equipment.
- Operate small power equipment such as weed eaters, chainsaws, blowers, hedgers, small mowers and others as identified.
- Assist and train public volunteers, students and partners as directed.
- Respond to inquiries from the general public.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Positions at the Open Space Maintenance Worker I position may exercise some of these knowledge and ability statements in a learning capacity.
Knowledge of:
- Habitat restoration and natural resource management techniques and standards.
- Plants and wildlife native to the Central Valley.
- Practices and procedures used in planting, irrigating and weed control in natural settings.
- Basic construction and repair methods.
- Plant disease and pest identification.
- Methods and techniques related to the proper handling of pesticides and toxic chemicals.
- Proper pruning methods and timing.
- The safe operation of various hand tools, power tools and equipment.
- Principles and practices of work safety.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively interacting with the public, partners, contractor and other City staff.
- Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in farming and restoration.
- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business function and program, project, task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
- On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules. Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain jobs to others.
- Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing installation of equipment; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 75 pounds or less.
- Obtain certifications as required by the City of Davis.
- Read and interpret plans, diagrams and written instructions.
- Train less experienced staff or volunteers and explain the job to others.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance and repair.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence and individual judgement to complete tasks within policy and guidelines.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form, to effectively perform work.
- Perform semi-skilled resource management work.
- Learn to operate a variety of farm and public works mechanical equipment.
- Learn to mix and apply herbicides and fertilizers.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Provide general assistance to the public.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

- Open Space Maintenance Worker II: Three years increasingly responsible experience in habitat restoration, public land management, farming or work similar to an Open Space Maintenance Worker I with the City of Davis
Other Qualifications
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and
abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Supplemental Information
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class “C” California driver's license, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of, or successful acquisition within probationary period, a valid certification in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and AED to be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California State Pesticide Qualified Applicator’s Certificate, desirable.
