Job Purpose
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of the corporation in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), as issued and enforced by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and other regulatory or advisory organizations. The CFO performs tasks as requested by, and is held directly accountable to, the President/CEO.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Oversight
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct, and evaluate the organization’s fiscal performance.
- Monitor all corporate accounting and financial functions to ensure accurate financial data and recordkeeping.
- Lead the development and implementation of the organization’s financial strategies and plans.
- Coordinate annual preparation and consolidation of operating and fixed asset budgets for fiscal year.
- Lead the organization’s budgeting process, including forecasting, analysis, and education for managers.
- Review grant proposal budgets.
- Advise leadership on the financial impact of long-range planning, strategic programs, and regulatory actions.
- Develop departmental credibility by providing timely, accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports, and trends to the President/CEO, Board, and senior leaders.
- Prepare monthly reports including:
- Income Statements
- Balance Sheets (debt and reserves)
- Cash Flow Statements
- Accounts Payable/Receivable Aging Analysis
- Review and analyze requests for corporate financial resources; make recommendations to the CEO and Finance Committee.
- Prepare monthly reports including:
Compliance, Audits & Controls
- Develop, implement, and enforce fiscal policies and procedures to ensure operational effectiveness.
- Oversee annual audits for both companies conducted by independent auditors.
- Ensure adherence to fiscal policies across all departments.
- Maintain confidentiality in all financial and personnel matters.
- Provide strategic financial insight for major decisions (e.g., partnerships, mergers, investments, pension funds).
- Optimize banking and deposit relationships; implement strategies to enhance cash flow.
- Develop and manage a reliable cash flow projection system with defined thresholds and intercompany loan tracking.
- Serve as financial advisor in the evaluation and execution of contracts.
- Evaluate the fiscal department structure; implement improvements and promote staff development and leadership growth.
- Review and approve monthly reconciliations, reports, and analysis prepared by the Controller.
HR & Payroll Coordination
- Collaborate with Human Resources to prepare the annual 401(k) allocation spreadsheet and calculate matching funds.
- Review property tax filings, IRS Form 990s, and tax returns for both non-profits and all partnerships.
- Ensure compliance with annual reporting requirements for all corporate entities.
- Review tax credit projects for cash flow and financial viability in housing development.
- Ensure accurate submission and approval of payroll tax reports via ADP.
- Coordinate biweekly payroll fund transfers for NHS and NHDS; serve as backup payroll processor when HR staff are unavailable.
IT Collaboration
- Coordinate with the IT Systems Administrator to:
- Assess and manage organizational data security risks.
- Plan for current and future IT needs related to financial operations and reporting.
General Duties
- Perform all tasks as assigned by the President/CEO.
- Authorize checks as appropriate.
- Support divisions with financial inquiries or assistance.
- Directly supervise the Controller and IT Systems Administrator; support the accounting team.
- Maintain current knowledge of corporate policies and procedures and GAAP.
- Support the team effort to accomplish the mission of New Hope Services and its divisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 3 years in a senior-level role.
- Master’s degree in Accounting/Finance or CPA preferred.
