The Rivers School — a 6-12 co-ed independent day school in Weston, MA, just outside Boston — seeks professionals who are looking to join a dynamic, innovative, and welcoming school community.

Position Purpose: The substitute school nurse is responsible for implementing the school health program in the absence of the regularly assigned school nurse. Scope of responsibilities include providing school nursing services for a designated school population, for the health needs of a specific student, for a group of students participating in a school sponsored field trip or out of school setting activity, or in collaboration with the permanent school nurse to implement special nursing activities.

Nursing Responsibilities:

  • Ability to originate, update, and/or monitor health care, maintain records, and implement the coordinated school health program and Standing Orders.
  • Has working knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA and how they apply to student medical records.
  • Oversees and provides direct care to students to maximize health and wellness within the school community.
  • Works in collaboration with consulting physician.  Work is self-directed but performed in accordance with the policies and procedures and state law regarding nursing practice.
  • Implement federal, state and local health regulations.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency in school nursing practice: Recognize changes in the student's physical and mental condition and take appropriate action. Adapt nursing care interventions to the student’s physical condition, emotional status, and developmental level.
  • Provide care to students with chronic, acute and emergent health care needs based on the individual’s condition and, when needed, in consultation with school physician, while meeting the standards of school nursing practice.
  • Maintain student’s confidential records of immunizations, medication administration, insurance, health findings, and other relevant health data.
  • Serve as a resource person on health-related topics for school staff
  • Identify community health resources and guide students, faculty and staff in their use.
  • Collaborate with the local health department on matters of public health.
  • Order and maintain security of school health supplies and medications.
  • Administer prescribed and over the counter medications per standing orders.
  • Responds to health related issues, providing crisis intervention when necessary, by communicating directly with appropriate division head and/or school counselor as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Current license to practice as a Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, per the Board of Registration in Nursing(BORN).
  • Current CPR/AED certification
  • CORI background check
  • Ability to be effective and work well with adolescents
  • Ability to relate to ones peer group, parents and students
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Proficient computer skills/applications for electronic records and communication
  • Previous pediatric nursing experience or school nursing experience preferred

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Work is generally performed in a school environment during the school day, but may involve accompanying students on field trips off school grounds.While performing the duties of this job, the nurse is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear.  Vision and hearing must be correctable. Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building.The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
