Job Summary: An Instructional Assistant assists teachers and other staff and works with students in a specialized area of instruction or behavior management. Duties include, but are not limited to, participating in the planning and development of a particular program for students in an area of specialization under the direction of the supervisor. Training of staff and students may also be involved. An instructional assistant works directly under the supervision of an administrator with a significant amount of independent initiative.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.
- Plan, develop, and implement program activities under the direction of the supervising administrator and/or designee.
- Instruct, supervise, monitor, and assess students in the program, teaching appropriate student behaviors and social skills.
- Cultivate relevant community, work site, or parental contacts.
- Maintain ongoing communication with school personnel regarding students in the program.
- Assist in the development and implementation of student transition and evaluation plans.
- Maintain program equipment and materials.
- Document student progress, prepare reports, and maintain Medicaid and student data sheets as requested.
- Maintain budget records.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of student information, providing information to parents, teachers, and others on a “need to know” basis, only.
- Attend staff, I.E.P, and parent meetings as required.
- Follow state and federal laws and local policies and procedures in the area of educational requirements and program operations.
- Participate in the planning, development, and support of behavior management strategies and techniques.
- Participate in required in-service training programs.
- Other duties as assigned or appropriate to the particular work setting.
Supervision Received: Reports to, receives daily work assignments, and is evaluated by Supervising Administrator or Designee.

Qualification Requirements:
Must demonstrate training, proficiency, and expertise in a specialized area of instruction or behavior management. Must be able to work independently. Must demonstrate experience working with students of various abilities. Requires evidence of meeting School District qualifications. An individual must be able to perform each job function in an efficient and compliant manner. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. - Education: High school degree, or equivalent. Additionally, must meet one of the following criteria:
- Associates Degree or higher
- 45 College Credits
- Accuplacer Test Scores of:
- Arithmetic equal or greater than 66,
- Elementary Algebra equal or greater than 42, and
- Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills combined equal or greater than 180
- Paraeducational Assessment from The Master Teacher. Passing status on Reading, Writing, & Math: Instructional Support & Knowledge Application. Contact Director of Special Services for information.
- Experience District requirements as outlined above. One year of directly relevant experience in a school setting desired. Good working knowledge of children, knowledge of education, and teaching methods desirable.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, interpret, and explain documents such as classroom assignment, professional documents, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively. Ability to provide effective instructional support and receive constructive feedback.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts (i.e. banking, discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume)
- Reasoning Ability/Mental Requirements: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations in a safe, efficient manner. Must be able to multi-task to meet objectives on time, on budget.
