POSITION: Lead Mechanic
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12-month contract

POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Mechanic is responsible for supervising and performing skilled mechanical maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on the district’s fleet of school buses, trucks, vans, and other vehicles. This role ensures all vehicles are safe, reliable, and compliant with state and federal regulations. The Lead Mechanic also oversees shop operations, preventive maintenance programs, and inventory management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Supervise and assign tasks to mechanics and service personnel.
2. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and computerized vehicle systems.
3. Oversee and implement preventive maintenance schedules.
4. Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and inventory.
5. Prepare cost estimates and recommend purchases of supplies and equipment.
6. Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation and other regulatory agencies.
7. Maintain video camera systems on buses.
8. Promote safety and cleanliness in all work areas.
9. Perform road tests and certify vehicles for operation.
10. Respond to emergency breakdowns and coordinate towing or on-site repairs.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
-High school diploma or GED.
-Minimum of 5 years of experience in automotive or diesel vehicle maintenance.
-Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements (or ability to obtain).
-Strong knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, repair procedures, and fleet maintenance.
-Experience supervising or leading a team.
-Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and maintenance software.
-Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
-Meet clearance requirements (drug test, background check, child abuse / neglect clearance).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-Vocational or technical training in automotive/diesel mechanics.
-Automotive service certification.
-Experience working in a school district or public fleet environment.
-Familiarity with state and federal transportation regulations.
-Welding and fabrication skills.
-Knowledge of inventory and parts management systems.
PHYSICAL & HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
-Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, and climbing.
-Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
-Ability to work in varying weather conditions and around loud equipment.
-Must maintain a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
