Staff Accountant

Position Summary
The Staff Accountant will be responsible for performing core accounting functions to support accurate and timely reporting of the MLBPA’s and its affiliates’ financial operations. The role offers opportunities for growth in a dynamic, mission-driven environment and requires a proactive mindset and strong organizational skills.


Key Responsibilities
      Accounting & Reporting
o    Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and reclassifications
o    Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings across multiple entities
o    Maintain balance sheet account reconciliations and supporting schedules
o    Support fixed asset accounting, including depreciation schedules using AssetEdge
o    Process and reconcile cash receipts and banking activity, including Trust-related receipts
o    Manage intercompany transactions and reconciliations between entities
o    Lead Player escheat process; maintain filing and disbursements
o    Support out-sources accounting activities and relationship with PriceWaterhouseCoopers and vendor management of the DR office

      Operational & Regulatory Compliance
o    Assist with annual LM-2 filing, including preparation of required schedules and documentation
o    Process and track Dominican Republic office invoices and tax filings; liaise with external compliance advisor
o    Ensure adherence to internal controls, accounting policies, and procedural standards
o    Maintain and update select sections of Standard Operating Procedures Manual

      Payroll & Benefits Accounting
o    Provide backup support for payroll processing across entities (including lead internal payroll processes with third-party (Corban) and Human Resources, including state withholding and State Unemployment Insurance tax registrations & filing, W-2, all benefits related activities, and Trust Salary Reimbursement entries)
o    Reconcile payroll-related accounts and ensure accurate classification and timing
o    Support the maintenance and development of Player war chest and net-distribution calculation models



      Dues & Player Services
o    Assist with Major and Minor League dues processing and reconciliation Manage
o    Assist with Player payment processes (annual licensing distributions/tracking, Highlights/hardship advances, support programs), including W-9 form requests and processing
o    Manage Player tax letter process
o    Support Player year-end 1099 preparation and distribution
o    Support collaboration with relevant parties to reissue uncleared Player checks and update the database for re-issued checks
o    Support ADAM and Player database resource management tools development accuracy and availability
o    Respond to Player, Player financial advisor requests (tax documents) and coordinate with internal departments for accurate delivery
o    Maintain lien files and processing
o    Lead the development of a Player financial metric reporting system using Power BI

       Audit Support & Ad-Hoc Projects
o    Prepare audit schedules and support internal/external auditors with timely, complete responses
o    Assist with financial analysis and special projects, including budgeting, forecasting, and ERP reporting enhancements

Qualifications
Education & Experience
•    Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
•    3+ years of hands-on accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, labor union, or multi-entity environment
•    CPA or working toward CPA certification preferred
Technical Skills
•    Strong understanding of GAAP and familiarity with internal control frameworks
•    Proficient in accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or similar ERP platforms)
•    Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, model building)
•    Experience with fixed assets and multi-entity reporting tools (AssetEdge experience a plus)
•    Familiarity with Department of Labor regulations related to financial reporting (preferred)

•    Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
•    Able to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
•    Strong communication skills—both written and verbal
•    Able to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines consistently
Additional Qualifications
•    Bilingual (English/Spanish) (a plus)
•    Interest in professional sports, labor relations, or mission-driven work a plus
•    Commitment to confidentiality, integrity, and the values of the MLBPA

Location: New York, NY (Hybrid Work Model)
Reports To: Controller
Salary: $95,000 to $105,000
Job Type: Full-Time, Exempt
