About the Department

Under general supervision, to enforce City and local ordinances governing the care and keeping of domestic animals in the City; to impound, care for, and dispose of animals as appropriate.  Exercises no supervision.

Position Duties

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Patrols an assigned area observing for violations and responding to incidents;
  • Investigates reports of animal abuse and animals creating nuisances;
  • Enforces City animal control and licensing laws;
  • Issues citations for violations of animal control and licensing ordinances;
  • Explains to the public ordinances relating to the care and keeping of animals;
  • Captures both domestic and wild animals using equipment and methods appropriate for animal control and abatement;
  • Impounds, quarantines, and disposes of animals as appropriate;
  • Provides public education regarding animal control;
  • Cleans and maintains the animal control vehicle and cages utilized to detain the animals;
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports;
  • Provides training to new Animal Services Officers;
  • Assists at front counter and in the kennel when necessary; and
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:
  • One year of experience in the care and handling of animals in a kennel, veterinary or related field.
Education:
  • High school graduate or equivalent. College level course work in animal science, zoology or a related field is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
  • Possession of, or the ability to possess and maintain, a valid California driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year, a P.C. 832 P.O.S.T. Certificate issued by the State of California.
  • Possession of a Euthanasia Certificate within nine months.
Special Requirements:
Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
  • Ability to work in office and outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs. or 100 lbs. with assistance; endure exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, and chemicals; and
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
