About the Department

Primary Reason Why Classification Exists
To perform skilled mechanical and electrical work maintaining and repairing machinery and equipment in Public Works & Utilities Department

Position Duties

  • Monitors SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) computer operations and reports events at substations and transformers; receives status messages and triggers system for operation
  • Operates generators in all modes; maintains logs and database records
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs or replaces, various pumps, engines, electric motors, SCADA systems, and related equipment including bearings, shafts, sleeves, and or other parts; orders necessary parts and supplies
  • Makes periodic inspections of equipment to ensure proper functioning; diagnoses problems and schedules necessary repairs
  • Coordinates facility maintenance with Public Works & Utilities Department
  • Operates the municipal machine shop including welding equipment
  • Cleans and paints municipal equipment
  • Performs repair and maintenance work for other divisions and departments as directed
  • Responds to emergencies when required and subject to call back
  • Performs related tasks as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, and usage of hand, bench, and machine tools and materials of the electrical and mechanical trades
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with general maintenance operations
  • Knowledge of common hand and specialized tools required in maintenance work
  • Knowledge of the safe use and preventive maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment required in the work
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems technology and the uses in municipal operations
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods; ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to follow and implement safety precautions
  • Ability to work from sketches and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers
  • Ability to use computer analytical equipment; ability to use and make repairs and adjustments to SCADA systems technology in various mechanical and electrical operations
  • Ability to follow instructions provided by crew leader and/or supervisor
  • Ability to work safely, efficiently, and within a scheduled period of time
  • Skill in the use and care of bench and hand tools, machines, and equipment

Other Qualifications

Physical Requirements
This is very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required to convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to receive oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Visual acuity is required for inspection of small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms' length, and operation of machines 
 
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and 5 - 7 years experience in heavy utility maintenance work. An Associate's degree in mechanical or electrical maintenance technology or related field is desired
 
Special Requirement

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Licensed as an electrician, plumber, or HVAC mechanic is desired
  • Certified in the installation and maintenance of SCADA systems is desired
