Senior Design Technologist

Job Description:

Play a multidisciplinary role in improving user experience and software development for healthcare projects by integrating user research, design, and engineering. Conduct design research to identify UX enhancements and scope UX contributions within project constraints. Responsibilities include creating visual sketches, storyboards, and mockups, as well as developing low and high-fidelity prototypes to refine designs before implementation. Facilitate brainstorming and data analysis sessions, document design decisions, and produce design specifications to guide the software development process. Manage the full software development lifecycle, from breaking down projects and estimating timelines to selecting appropriate technologies and implementing system specifications. Create database schemas, define data transfer requirements, and introduce new tools, frameworks, and languages as needed. Write writing unit and integration tests, debug regressions, and ensure adherence to coding standards through code reviews. Work closely with stakeholders to define technical system requirements, provide project updates, and align software solutions with the Institute’s mission. Translate UX mockups into functional development prototypes, model system behaviors, and incorporate third-party libraries to improve productivity. Provision and maintain secure, HIPAA-compliant test and production environments, configuring databases and server software, and supporting web, server, mobile application projects, and occasionally physical products. Ensuring feasibility within technology constraints, tailor interaction designs using widely recognized design patterns to simplify development and improve usability. Contribute to knowledge-sharing and documentation efforts, creating user guides, walkthrough videos, and internal technical documentation. Educate stakeholders on research implications of software projects, update wikis and codebases to reflect the current state of deliverables, and lead presentations on emerging technologies. Maintain legacy healthcare software and infrastructure, recognizing the need to balance innovation with long-term sustainability.

Job Requirements:

  1. Master’s degree in Computer Science, Human Computer Interaction, or closely-related field.
  2. Two (2) years of experience in full-stack web development.
  3. Two (2) years of experience in academic healthcare research, including UX research and design, which may have been gained as part of or in addition to the full-stack web development experience.
  4. Additional experience must include:
    1. UX Research and Visual Design
      1. Creating scripts and protocols for, and conducting generative and evaluative research activities: interviews, contextual inquiries, usability testing, and heuristic evaluations.
      2. Analyzing qualitative and quantitative data using affinity diagrams, personas, scenarios, and user stories.
  • Creating user interface and interaction sketches as well as low and high-fidelity prototypes with Balsamiq, Adobe Xd, and Sketch for multiple form factors including mobile, tablet and desktop in support of low-literacy and older-adult populations.

  1. Frontend Development
    1. Developing custom CSS with responsive designs, animations, and print-friendly formatting while leveraging Bootstrap and Tailwind.
    2. Building web applications using JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, and RESTful APIs, creating dynamic views for Model-View-Controller (MVC) architectures with Groovy Server Pages, and Single Page Applications with React and Vue.js.

  2. Backend/Application Development and Operations
    1. Designing and maintaining relational databases with SQL, designing entity-relation and data flow diagrams, and creating and maintaining server-side applications, including RESTful APIs, with PHP, Java, Node.js, and Docker or Podman.
    2. Information extraction using Natural Language Processing applications including rule-based pattern matching.
  • Building Research Data Capture (REDCap) and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) applications.
  1. Must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
