Airport Operations 

 

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Reports to: Assistant Operations Manager

Shift: Tuesday-Saturday, 40-hours/week with OT as required. Work schedules may vary, including shift work, weekends and holidays, depending on departmental needs.


Position Summary

The Custodian Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the high-quality care, cleaning, and disinfecting of airport facilities. Duties include supervising the custodial team, cleaning floors, sanitizing restrooms, managing trash, disinfecting surfaces, and related tasks. The Custodian Supervisor will conduct training, manage equipment and supplies, perform inspections, and distribute work assignments. They will lead custodial operations day-to-day and assist with additional duties when the Assistant Operations Manager is unavailable. Inspections should verify that work is completed thoroughly and meets established quality standards.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct training for new custodial staff and provide ongoing training for current team members on cleaning standards, safety, airport procedures, and proper equipment use. 
  • Serve as a duty point of contact to respond to cleaning requests from staff and stakeholders. 
  • Perform inspections of facilities, supplies, and equipment and delegate responses to deficiencies. 
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, coordinate remedies to shortages or maintenance needs promptly. Drive to airport facilities to inspect, clean, and train. 
  • Enforce safety protocols and compliance standards, including the proper use of PPE and SDS on-file. 
  • Distribute work assignments and ensure daily schedules are properly staffed and balanced.
  • Clean the interior of buildings including floors, carpets, windows, and walls.
  • Disinfect commonly used items like furniture, door handles, office equipment, etc. 
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain restrooms.  
  • Empty trash and recycling bins.  
  • Operate floor scrubbers, buffers, and other equipment. 
  • Restock supplies, report needed repairs.  
  • Escort airport visitors or contractors.  
  • Participate in random airport worker screenings as needed.  
  • Participate in Airport sponsored special events.
  • Under stressful circumstances, assist Airport staff during emergencies involving aircraft or vehicle accidents or incidents and inclement or hazardous weather preparation, event, and recovery.
  • Support the Airport Authority's mission, vision, and values statements in all aspects of work.  All employees are expected to be part of our customer service team as Dedicated Customer Care Specialists.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Functional Requirements

  • One year of experience in commercial building cleaning or similar work experience.
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent education.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid United States, state issued, driver's license.
  • Must complete and pass a comprehensive background and Criminal History Records check and be able to obtain security and access credentials. 
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical.
  • Position is required to occasionally drive Authority vehicles on Airport grounds and public roadways.   

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard cleaning methods, procedures, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.  
  • Knowledge of safety best practices and work methods.
  • Ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Ability to understand, speak, read, and write fluent English.
  • Ability to receive, understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, Airport tenants and contractors.
  • Ability to work various shifts as assigned.
  • Ability to operate independently and/or within a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment within expected timelines.
  • Ability to learn, understand and remember normal tasks.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service and interact with passengers to include those who may be emotionally distressed and/or have disabilities (hidden or otherwise). 

Work Environment

Work is performed in airport buildings with moderate inside temperatures and noise levels which may be moderate to loud.  Occasional work may be required outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions and moderate to loud noise levels.  Exposure to dust, grease, excessive noise or vibration, and blood borne pathogens, and/or bodily fluids may be expected.  All work areas and Authority vehicles are smoke free.  

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crawl, and kneel for extended periods of time. 
  • Ability to see and read letters, numbers, characters, symbols, and identify colors.
  • Ability to use a variety of custodial equipment which requires the use of hands, wrists and fingers.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs, perform overhead and outstretched lifting and reaching. 
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects, up to and including 50 pounds.
  • Must have verbal auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner.
