About the Opportunity

This is an open position at Meter Installer, Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [PE]

Job Responsibilities

Meter Installer performs duties required to install, remove, replace, inspect, test, maintain, troubleshoot and repair self- contained company electrical and electronic meters, instruments, and related equipment. The duties include reading meters, disconnecting and reconnecting electric services, investigating services, diversions, tampering, meter investigations, other metering irregularities and conducting special surveys.  They effectively assist higher rated employees in the performance of duties within their qualifications. Instructs and directs other employees in the performance of any duties for which they are qualified, performs work of a lower classification, and performs other work as assigned.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to all safety rules and guidelines established by the company and utilize all safety and personal protective equipment to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Install, remove, replace, inspect, test and repair self-contained company electrical and electronic meters, instruments, and related equipment
  • Conduct meter socket voltage safety checks and recognize proper meter forms.
  • Obtain accurate meter readings, obtain special reads and complete work orders in handheld device
  • Disconnect and reconnect service on self- contained meters. 
  • Conduct and complete work for special projects and surveys as necessary.
  • Investigate diversion, tampering, mixed meters, and other service/meter irregularities and take necessary action to complete the work order and/or forms.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with computer, tablet, phones, and other communication devices.
  • Participate in emergency work within and outside Operating Company service areas and assist with other departments as needed.
  • Work cooperatively with internal/external team members and customers in accordance with the company's customer service standards.
  • Document and inform supervision of adverse safety conditions regarding meters, meter sockets, electric services and lines.
  • Operate a company vehicle and monitor to ensure routine maintenance, by checking oil, water, battery, gas, tire level and report any issues.
  • Complete annual training/refresher courses and additional training as necessary.
  • Training and instructing other employees as requested.
  • Assist higher rated employees in the installation removal, replacement, inspection, testing, and repair of meters, instruments, and related equipment and circuits.
  • Keep company issued tools and equipment in good working order. 
  • Keep work areas neat and orderly and properly clean up after completion of the job.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The following minimum qualifications must be met to obtain and retain this classification:
  • Education and Experience: Ability to meet job knowledge and skill requirements will be determined by company interviews and tests. Meter reading experience and knowledge of basic electricity.
  • Safety: Ability to work safely and follow all safety rules and regulations and meet first-aid requirements. 
  • Physical: Manual dexterity to operate hand held devices and accurately input information, ability to do considerable walking or driving, ascend and descend steps and ladders, work in all weather conditions and navigate across rough terrain.  Ability to lift and carry more than 25 pounds and possess range of motion commensurate with installation and/or removal of meters. Must have vision corrected to 20-30.
  • Mental: Ability to report meter conditions and read data accurately, read and take appropriate action based upon reports and work orders, deal with customers, and the public in a professional and courteous manner, work with energized meters and the ability to deal with potentially dangerous animals. 
  • Clerical: Ability to communicate effectively, operate two-way radios, telephones, cellular phones, and other communication devices. Ability to operate computers, tablets and associated software, and write legibly to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.    
  • Work Characteristics: Meet Company standards regarding physical fitness, personal conduct, appearance, attendance, work performance, and safety practices.
  • Special:  Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and be able to safely operate motor vehicles.  Possess a knowledge of company standards and specifications for all types of self-contained meter installations.
  • Employee must meet the residency requirements, where applicable.
