Goodwill of Western & Northern Connecticut is seeking driven individuals to join us in our mission to help others and serve our local communities.
The Controller position ensures sound fiscal policy management for the entire agency.
Directs the financial affairs of Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut, Inc. and Helms Housing and prepares financial analyses of operations, including interim and final financial statements with supporting schedules, for the guidance of management.
Additionally, this role is to oversee daily accounting operations as it pertains to general accounting, grants accounting, retail stores accounting, and payroll administration in accordance with company policies, GAAP and all governmental regulations. In addition, the Sr. Controller will plan and conduct complex studies to improve the operational and financial effectiveness of the agency. Perform complex statistical, cost and financial analysis of financial reports and data, and prepare subsequent narrative analysis for management
Essential Job Functions:
- Develop, analyze, and interpret accounting information to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.
- Maintain a qualified, trained staff in accounting to meet company needs and objectives.
- Focus on the development of each team member.
- Set expectations and hold team to established metrics.
- Maintains the system of accounts and keeps the books and records on both companies' transactions and assets.
- Assists in the coordination and preparation of the budget and financial forecasts that produce analytical and variance reports.
- Responsible for compliance with all federal, state and local corporate rules and regulations, payrolls, and applicable taxes.
- Determines which expenditures meet the capitalization criteria.
- Provides the organization and its management with appropriate financial and operating reports to assist other department groups with interpreting and analyzing financial reports.
- Performs professional accounting work in accordance with prescribed accounting systems and generally accepted principles of accounting.
- Responsible for the monthly aged accounts receivable lists, the concentration cash accounts and budget administration.
- Integrates accounting systems with other departmental systems, e.g., payroll, Point of Sale, HRIS.
- Assists in the preparation, analysis, and review of revenues and expenditures for Contributed Goods.
- Responsible for preparation of journal entry and distribution of wages and fringes to regular and consumer employees in compliance with federal & state regulations and company policy.
- Oversee preparation of month-end closings.
- Assists in development financial reports for forecasting, trending, and results analysis.
- Records, classifies, and summarizes financial transactions and events in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Interprets financial transactions and events for users who must make economic or business decisions.
- Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. Streamline efficiencies through process improvement and proper use of technology.
- On a regular and continuous basis, exercises administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
- Organize and coordinate the year-end general ledger account analysis for the external auditors.
- Organize and coordinate with the CFO the analysis needed for the agency's general liability, P & C and D & 0 insurance program.
- Maintain the MIP accounting software system and interact with the manufacturer as necessary for major software upgrades.
- Prepares monthly GIi MSR and annual ASR.
- Prepares annual GIi dues calculation.
- Prepares quarterly CHFA submittal.
- Reconciles accounts {bank reconciliation).
- Coordination of annual audit, including addressing compliance or control concerns
- Maintain strong internal controls
- Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, master's degree and/or CPA preferred with minimum of three (3) to five (5) years' experience in private industry.
- Preferred not-for-profit experience.
- Proficient with MIP accounting software, Excel, and Word.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to forecast and implement strategic planning.
