Position Duties

SENIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

  • Uses computer and manual drafting instruments to perform or assist in research, computing, drafting, checking, surveying and field work for the preparation of plans, designs, estimates, and specifications for design, construction, maintenance and operation of engineering projects;
  • Calculates distances, angles, areas, stations, traverses and closures; plots profiles and cross sections;
  • Inspects public works construction for conformance to design and specifications and assists in performing fire flow test;
  • Maintains GIS maps and records;
  • Assists in engineering planning, surveying, mapping and design work;
  • Reviews and processes tenant improvements, development application plans, and performs water and sewer permit inspections;
  • Makes rough layouts, tracings, drawings and title sheets;
  • Compiles field notes and computes grades, prepares sketches and permanent plans, diagrams and maps for public works projects;
  • Calculates fire flow, pressure, distances, angles, areas, stations, traverses and closures;
  • Lays out, draws, inks and traces maps;
  • Plots profiles and cross sections;
  • Operates the water and wastewater computer flow model;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

SENIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN: Graduation from an accredited High School or successful completion of the G.E.D. (General Educational Development) exam, including completion of courses in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and mechanical drawing and three (3) years of experience in design drafting and/or survey work is required.

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN:
Graduation from an accredited High School or successful completion of the G.E.D. (General Educational Development) exam, including completion of courses in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and mechanical drawing and o
ne (1) year of experience in design drafting and/or survey work is required.

KNOWLEDGE OF
Computer and manual drafting, surveying, mapping and inspection techniques, practices and equipment (i.e., AutoCADD, GPS, GIS); principles of algebra, geometry and trigonometry and their application to engineering; construction methods and materials; the nomenclature, symbols, methods, practices, techniques and instruments used in engineering and mapping; and customer service techniques and principles.
 
ABILITY TO
Prepare maps, drawings and layouts from notes and sketches, neatly and accurately; make accurate engineering computations; work cooperatively with and assist in the supervision of others; follow oral and written directions; use computers, programmable calculators, and drafting instruments; prepare plans and drawings neatly and accurately; plan, layout, direct and participate in survey work; keep records and make reports; prepare engineering estimates; assist in the preparation of engineering planning reports and studies; and commit to providing quality customer service.
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record. An acceptable driving record is one that has three (3) or fewer DMV points issued within the past five (5) years, and no more than one (1) DUI within the past ten (10) years.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Incumbents in this classification sit, stand, walk, turn/twist, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, distinguish shades/color vision, see small details, use a personal computer and phone, and drive a vehicle.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment described here is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Incumbents in this classification work inside, outside, around moving vehicles/construction equipment and with direct contact with the public.
