About the Department

The work involves responsibility for making definitive patient care decisions under stressful situations, as well as effectively directing, or working with, others at an emergency scene.  A Paramedic is a New York State certified emergency responder capable of effectively delivering advanced emergency care and treatment to those sick or injured in various, sometimes physically demanding, situations.   Work is performed in the office and in the field.  Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel.  The work is performed under the clinical supervision of the assigned supervisor and the administrative supervision of the Emergency Medical Services Director.  A Paramedic does related work as assigned.

Position Duties

  • Determines and professionally delivers appropriate and required emergency patient care to persons suffering from problems related to trauma or medical emergencies;
  • Assesses emergency scenes for responder safety and potential emergency resources required;
  • Operates emergency response motor vehicles;
  • Communicates findings to, and requests medical direction from, a medical control physician;
  • Documents and verbally reports emergency care provided to all patients;
  • Coordinates emergency response with other local emergency care providers, and assists with the necessary patient care at either the basic or advanced level;
  • Communicates with (or interviews) patients, patient’s family members, and bystanders as necessary;
  • Demonstrates the proper operation of the emergency medical equipment on which the Paramedic is trained;
  • Effectively communicates to groups or individuals the benefits of advanced life support and is conversant in the dispatch policy for advanced life support services in Livingston County;
  • Calculates weight and volume ratios for medication administration;
  • Maintains and ensures proper operation of emergency medical equipment;
  • Inventories and restocks emergency medical supplies and drugs (using established safeguards);
  • Participates in emergency medical training with other Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, which may occasionally include providing training for others; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:   Thorough knowledge regarding the provision of basic and advanced emergency medical care as authorized by local and state protocols; thorough knowledge regarding the operation of medical equipment needed to provide emergency medical care; thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of emergency medical services;  thorough knowledge of the procedures, equipment, and terminology associated with radio communications in an emergency medical service setting; good working knowledge of intravenous drugs and fluid administration as authorized by local and state protocol; good working knowledge of the operation of a cardiac monitor/defibrillator as well as other pre-hospital medical equipment; good manual dexterity; demonstrate the tact necessary to effectively work with emergency responders from any other agency operating in the County; ability to work independently; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to comprehend and apply information presented in tabular form; ability to comprehend and apply information contained in technical manuals pertaining to emergency medical services and equipment; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to keep accurate, clear, legible records and make reports; ability to lift and carry 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance); ability to perform activities in a variety of environments, temperatures, and weather conditions; ability to work in low light situations and confined spaces; ability to enter and move within private residences; ability to climb stairs; ability to stoop, bend, kneel and crawl on uneven terrain; ability to be unaffected by loud noises and flashing lights; ability to accurately discern street signs and addresses; ability to get along well with peers and to secure their cooperation; ability to get along with patients, physicians, and others; ability to use good judgment and to remain calm in stressful situations; ability to effectively demonstrate equipment to other EMS providers or the general public; tact and courtesy; professional in appearance;  self-motivation; maturity; emotional stability; good powers of observation and analysis;  physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Applicants must meet all requirements described in the following table in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

License/Certification 
  • Possession of a current New York State Department of Health certification as an EMT-Paramedic; AND
  • Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.

Other Qualifications

  1. Appointee must possess a current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR certification at appointment.
  2. Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance).
  3. Appropriate certifications and licensure must be maintained in good standing throughout employment.
  4.  An appropriate driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.
  5. A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.  
  6. Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes. 
  7. Meet the Qualifications and Competencies set forth in the EMT-B/AEMT Functional Position Description by the NYS Department of Health.

Paramedic - C in all divisions

PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT NOTICE:
An individual who receives a provisional appointment must take the examination for the position title on the next occasion it is offered. In order to be eligible for a permanent appointment to the position, the provisional appointee must pass the exam and be ranked 1, 2, 3, or be tied in score with the individual ranked number 3 of those who are willing to accept appointment to the position. It should be understood that even if the provisional appointee is eligible for appointment, the employer may choose another candidate to fill the position on a permanent basis. Questions regarding provisional appointments should be directed to the Livingston County Human Resources Department.

NOTE:  Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position. However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
