Utilities Maintenance Division: The mission of the Utilities Maintenance Division is to provide responsible operation and maintenance of the water and sewer lines, fire hydrants, valves, manholes, and lift stations to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Jacksonville.

General Description: The City of Jacksonville is seeking a water lines and wastewater lines professional to work in the Utilities Maintenance Division. As a Lines Maintenance Worker with this position you will primarily be working on the underground water and sewer line leak repair crews. This will consist of the use of shovels, tamps, power tools etc. Lines Maintenance Workers perform responsible semiskilled manual work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of specialized tools and small equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $30,713.07 - $39,927.06 depending on qualifications.
Position Duties
Maintaining and repairing drainage facilities and/or water and sewer lines and appurtenances; operating a variety of equipment, mowers and trucks. - Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew including ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling.
- Assists with cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans and flushes water mains, pipe, gates and fittings on repair of mains and services and installation of services and fire hydrants; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains.
- Mows pump stations and water well sites.
- Conducts land clearing on rights of way.
- Landscaping for land restoration and sod installation.
- Assists with the determination of the locations of telephone, power, television, water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
- Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluates situation; explains findings to supervisor.
- Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
- Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the performance of tasks; to include CDL required equipment.
- Responds to customer complaints of water issues.
- Diagnoses and assists in initiating the repair procedures.
- Setting up traffic control points on city streets and major highways.
- Confined space entry in manholes, wet wells, and valve/meter vaults.
- Operate combination truck to perform hydro excavations.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
Appropriate driver's license valid in the state of NC is required.
Other Qualifications
Some knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; some knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
