The Advanced Technology Group (ATG) is the research division of the company. ATG’s mission is to look ahead, deliver insights, and innovate technological solutions that will fuel Dolby’s continued growth. Our researchers have a broad range of expertise related to computer science and electrical engineering, such as AI/ML, algorithms, digital signal processing, audio engineering, image processing, computer vision, data science & analytics, distributed systems, cloud, edge & mobile computing, computer networking, and IoT.
About the Role

We’re seeking a visionary research leader with deep expertise in AI, Data Science, and Distributed Systems to drive innovation across our advanced technology initiatives.
What You’ll Do
As a senior leader, you will:
- Lead strategic research programs focused on scalable data platforms, immersive media, collaborative systems, and intelligent visualization—spanning domains such as social media, enterprise communication, cinema, mobile, and gaming.
- Architect distributed systems for training and deploying AI models at scale, with a focus on edge computing, data efficiency, and real-time responsiveness.
- Drive innovation in AI/ML, natural language processing, data mining, and cognitive systems—balancing long-term vision with near-term deliverables.
- Mentor and grow world-class research teams, fostering a culture of curiosity, rigor, and impact.
- Collaborate with global leadership to shape ATG’s research portfolio, influence technology strategy, and align with business goals.
- Champion bottom-up innovation, supporting researchers in developing novel ideas and translating them into high-impact technologies.
- Represent ATG externally, contributing to academic and industry thought leadership through publications, talks, and strategic partnerships.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 12+ years of research experience in Distributed Systems, Edge Computing, and AI Infrastructure, with a proven track record of leading impactful initiatives.
- Strong publication record in top-tier venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, VLDB, SIGMOD, CVPR, ACL, KDD).
- Deep expertise in one or more of the following:
- Distributed databases and storage systems
- Scalable AI/ML model deployment
- Natural language processing and computer vision
- Multimedia systems and network optimization
- Data mining, knowledge discovery, and visualization
Leadership Competencies:
- Strategic Vision: Ability to anticipate technological shifts and craft research agendas that position ATG at the forefront of innovation.
- Influence & Collaboration: Trusted advisor across engineering, product, and executive teams. Builds consensus and drives alignment.
- Team Building: Proven success in recruiting, mentoring, and retaining top research talent. Skilled in translating business goals into team objectives.
- Execution Excellence: Balances bold innovation with disciplined execution. Makes data-informed decisions and manages risk effectively.
- Communication: Exceptional scientific writing and presentation skills. Comfortable briefing executives and engaging with external stakeholders.
The San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $277,900-$358,200 which can vary if outside this location, plus bonus, benefits, and some roles may also include equity. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
