RN Apprentice - Per Diem* (Med/Surg & ER)
*IMPORTANT NOTE: In lieu of benefits due to "per diem" status, 15% will be added to the hourly rate. Per diem employees are offered work on an "as-needed" basis.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Nurse Apprentice is a student enrolled in an accredited pre-licensure registered nursing program. The Nurse Apprentice provides basic nursing care to patients with the direction or a preceptor while acting within the guidelines of the Nevada State Board of Nursing’s approved Nurse Apprentice skills list. As the Nurse Apprentice progresses through their nursing program, their ability to perform more of the approved skills increases according to those skills taught in school. The Nurse Apprentice program offers students the opportunity and experience to acclimate to the role of a licensed nurse.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Current full time enrollment in good standing at a school of nursing which is accredited by the NLNAC or the CCNE, in addition to being approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing.
- Successfully completed first semester nursing fundamentals with a minimum of two semesters remaining in the program of study.
- Previous applicable work experience can be accepted in lieu of two remaining semesters in the program of study.

Certification Required:
- BLS for Healthcare Providers required.
Minimum Work Experience
- Previous department specific experience preferred.
- Professional customer service skills.
- Ability to read and communicate in English, bilingual abilities preferred.
POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Patient Care
- Proactively utilizes Registered Nurse preceptor as a resource for guidance, direction and supervision related to all aspects of patient care.
- Accurately assesses and documents patient and family needs to provide quality care to assigned patients and ensure integration of information among the multi-disciplinary health care team.
- Demonstrates timely, accurate and complete EHR and/or paper documentation in accordance with specific unit standards. Obtains RN co-signature/sign-off on all documentation.
- Secures valuables and/or home medications per policy and releases valuables and/or medications per policy upon discharge.
- Using SBAR communication, notifies physician of changes in patient status.
- Notifies physician of abnormal laboratory and/or test results.
- Completes bedside hand-off communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate and documents in EHR.
Medication Management
- Assist with the preparation and administration of medications under the direct supervision of an RN.
- Observe and report any adverse reactions or side effects to the supervising nurse.
- Participate in patient education regarding medication usage, side effects, and management.
Judgment
- Demonstrates initiative with learning to implement patient care plans, nursing interventions, and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient.
- Demonstrates knowledge of hospital policies and procedures.
- Utilizes resources necessary to carry out patient care, such as looking up commonly used medication’s action, dose, and side effects.
- Observes the rights of medication administration
- Demonstrates proper procedures in all methods of medication administration that are outlined within the Nurse Apprentice scope of practice.
- Initiates and maintains IV access according to hospital policy and procedures.
- Assesses and documents IV site per unit standard.
- Uses critical thinking and efficient time management.
Scope of Service
- Performs consistent, purposeful hourly rounding
- Provide nursing care to a diverse patient population, including those with acute, chronic, and complex medical conditions.
- Assesses, evaluates, and carries out nursing interventions and teaching as applicable for med-surg and swing bed patients.
- Demonstrates initiative and teamwork in nursing management of emergency situations.
- Demonstrates willingness to learn how to safely and effectively use patient equipment
- Demonstrates willingness to learn how to set up and maintain sterile field for minor sterile procedures such as insertion of central lines, chest tubes, etc.
- Demonstrates knowledge of current policies and procedures pertaining to vaccination of patients and the documentation of patient teaching.
