Nemours is seeking a Phlebotomist to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Wilmington, Delaware.

Experienced pediatric phlebotomist (to serve in a full-time, dayshift position) in the Outpatient Specimen Collection Area. Responsibilities encompass all core tasks necessary to deliver specimen collection services to patients and families, including front desk and phlebotomy support. Along with exceptional phlebotomy skills ideal candidate possess a patient-centric mindset with the ability to deliver exceptional customer service.

  • Collects specimens – primarily blood specimens – on patients of all ages, but primarily pediatric patients, by venipuncture and capillary methods, paying close attention to patient safety, comfort and accuracy of information (e.g., specimen label), and acting courteously and professionally at all times. Patients may be newborns who require very careful attention and support; patients may also be complex patients with special needs. Attention must be paid to collecting specimens appropriate for the tests ordered by the clinician, as well as to appropriate blood amounts, especially, taking into consideration the patient’s size, condition and the need to minimize discomfort to the patient and family. 
  • Distributes specimens to correct laboratory section as assigned. Performs all associated paperwork or computer entry to complete specimen collection.
  • Collects specimens on adults as assigned; i.e., hospital employees, participants in research protocols or when associated with the care of hospital/practice patients. 
  • Uses information systems as required for patient and laboratory information. 
  • Accurately records information as assigned (e.g., completion of outside laboratory requisitions, etc.) 
  • Courteously and professionally provides “reception” services, e.g., telephone coverage, meeting and greeting customers, visitors, employees, etc. Follows hospital customer service guidelines.
  • Picks up and delivers specimens, reagents, etc., as assigned. 
  • Maintains work area in a neat fashion, including disinfecting equipment, bench top, etc. as required or assigned. Performs cleaning (e.g., of lab, storage areas, as assigned). 
  • Follows all laboratory and hospital safety policies, infection control policies, etc. Must be able to perform functions using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and barrier protection, such as disposable gloves, laboratory coats, shields, goggles, etc. Must be able to use new safety protocols as assigned, for example, enhanced PPE.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.  Training in a Phlebotomy program required. 
  • Minimum of 1 year experience required.
  • Pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.
