About the Department
Under the supervision of the Fire Station Maintenance Coordinator, the employee performs a variety of semiskilled and skilled firefighting equipment maintenance and repair, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and rescue equipment and tools, ensuring the equipment meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations. The employee maintains assigned fire trucks ensuring they are clean, fueled, and ready to respond to an emergency. The employee is responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of the fire stations in the City to include interior, exterior, and grounds maintenance. Employee conducts daily inspections of facility and maintains records of work; performs various building and grounds general maintenance work. Employee exercises independent judgment in completing assigned work. Work is performed in accordance with established rules, regulations, and instructions. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment background check and random drug screens.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Fire Apparatus and Equipment Maintenance. The employee performs duties to maintain and service firefighting equipment and vehicles for immediate use.
- Checks all equipment on fire trucks and rescue vehicles to make sure it is in good operating condition.
- Checks and fills all fluids in vehicle engines, (i.e., oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, etc.).
- Checks vehicle tires for proper pressure.
- Tests, runs, and exercises all equipment.
- Verifies that all required equipment is on all trucks and is in proper locations.
- Oversees SCBA gear for damages, runs computerized tests on the SCBA functions, performs routine maintenance on the SCBA bottles and external components, and monitors hydrostatic testing dates to ensure readiness and proper operation.
- Washes and fuels fire and rescue vehicles.
- Tests, runs, and exercises all truck levelers and pumps.
- Washes all necessary equipment after an emergency call.
- Maintains daily activity logs of tasks and duties accomplished.
- Reviews previous use of equipment.
- Performs hose and pump testing and maintenance.
- Reports abnormalities immediately in writing to supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Fire Facility Maintenance. Employee performs duties and tasks to ensure fire stations and other fire facilities are maintained in serviceable condition and ready for use in responding to emergency calls.
- Maintains fire stations in a clean and orderly manner by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, maintaining adequate supply of towels and linens; replacing light bulbs, filters, paper products and other supplies; cleaning windows, bay area, and bathrooms according to schedule.
- Performs facility maintenance activities such as remodeling, painting, light carpentry, and vehicle maintenance, etc.
- Performs grounds maintenance including cutting grass, edging, cleaning gutters, washing pad, and parking lot and cleaning other outside areas as scheduled.
- Greets visitors to station, providing requested information.
- Assists in conducting tours of station as scheduled for a variety of groups.
- Runs emergency generators to ensure backup power capacity.
- Prepares fire stations for meetings and cleans up afterwards.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:
- Assists with City special events such as placing barricades and barriers.
- Responds to calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other situations as needed.
- Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess a high school diploma or GED; an associates degree from an accredited college in fire science or related field is preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of work experience with facility and equipment maintenance; fire service experience is preferred; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.
- Possess a current and valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain this licensee within six (6) months of hire; must be insurable.
- Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed.
- Ability to be on call in emergencies.
- Ability to travel overnight, as the job requires.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
