About the Department

Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to maintain, inspect and repair machinery, mechanical, and electrical equipment at the water plants. Employees in this classification function at an entry level position. Knowledge will be acquired by working with experienced staff and on the job training. Machinery, mechanical, and electrical equipment consists of motors, pneumatic systems, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, and rotating equipment.

  • Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
  • Working knowledge of electrical control systems and PLC’s.
  • Knowledge and use of dial indicators and micrometers.
  • Dismantling of devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.
  • Inspecting parts for wear or damage.
  • Adjust operational parts of devices and control instrumentation to insure proper operation.
  • Repair or replace defective parts. 
  • Lubricate and clean parts.
  • Starting and testing equipment.
  • Be able to use meters, test fuses, test power, meg motors, troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment.
  • Emergency call back duty.
  • Asist plant operators in any projects or problems they may be having.
  • Preforming monthly safety inspections of equipment.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Position Duties

High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one (1) year responsible experience in large scale commercial pumping systems, motors, and electrical equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. FLDEP Level 3 Water Distribution certification must be obtained within 12 months of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE, which includes but not limited to hard hat, gloves, eye protection.
  • Knowledge of pumps, motors, gearboxes, electrical and other applicable equipment.

Other Qualifications

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to lift, move or carry objects up to 50 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps.  utilize feet and legs or hands and arms to preform their duties.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to push and/or pull over 100 pounds.
  • While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, excessive noise, vehicular traffic, dampness, humidity, cold, and hot temperatures. 
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed electricity, high work areas, confined spaces, moving mechanical parts and machinery.
