About the Department

This position develops and presents water safety instruction for swim classes for the Parks and Recreation Department. The need to respond to emergency incidents contributes to the complexity of the position. The work consists of related instructional duties. Success in this position contributes to the safety of patrons.

Position Duties

This description is intended to indicate the essential functions and levels of work difficulty of the position and is not intended to describe in detail all of the position's specific duties and responsibilities nor exclude other duties of similar level or difficulty.  Additionally, it is not intended to limit management's rights to assign, direct, and control the work of employees beyond the essential functions under their supervision.

Ensures the safety of patrons and swim lesson participants. 
Organizes and teaches swim safety classes. 
Recognizes and responds effectively to emergencies. 
Supervises and gives instructions to Water Safety Instruction aides. 
Guarantees class participants meet all course expectations. 
Enforces pool rules and regulations. 
Maintains records and completes reports. 
Submits complete course records. 
Issues course completion certificates. 

Minimum Qualifications

Must be sixteen (16) years of age at time of hire. One (1) year of experience; or competition of an approved certification program. Note: An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.

Possess and maintain a valid Nevada or “border state” driver’s license, as defined by NRS 483. 

Must possess or have the ability to readily obtain appropriate CPR/First Aid and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification. 

Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check, and a wants/warrants check.

Other Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of pool safety guidelines; water rescue techniques; swimming instruction techniques and guidelines; pool maintenance and safe operation standards; department policies and procedures and health department regulations.


Skill in effective and efficient communication, both verbally and in writing; using personal computers, facsimile machines, ten-key adding machines, cash registers, and telephones.


Ability to analyze problems and develop and implement solutions; provide water rescue services; complete reports; read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent; understand, interpret and apply department policies, procedures and health department regulations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and follow written and verbal instructions.

May be required to work an alternative or flexible work schedule, outside of normal business hours, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or extended hours.


PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

General Physical Requirements Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds unassisted.

Physical Activities The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.


Visual Acuity The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.


Working Conditions The work is typically performed in an aquatics facility. Work may be performed outdoors in cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
