Position Summary
The Comptroller is a hands-on, process-driven leader who oversees the daily financial operations of the Urban League of Rochester (ULR) and its subsidiary, the Urban League of Rochester Economic Development Corporation (ULREDC).
Reporting directly to the President & CEO, this role manages the finance department staff (up to five employees) and is responsible for ensuring that accounting, payables, receivables, reimbursements, and monthly reporting are completed accurately, consistently, and on time.
The ideal candidate thrives on rolling up their sleeves, driving efficient processes, and holding the team accountable for results.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance
- Manage vouchering for reimbursable programs, ensuring submissions are accurate and on schedule
- Ensure receivables are collected promptly, maintaining consistent cash flow
- Lead the month-end close process, including reconciliations and timely reporting
- Manage finances of ULREDC, including development and real estate accounting
- Develop and enforce strong financial processes and internal controls
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit standards, and funder requirements
- Supervise, train, and evaluate finance staff (up to five employees)
- Provide accurate reports for the CEO, Board, and funders
- Work with auditors, funders, and external partners to ensure compliance and accountability
Expected Reports
- Monthly financial statements (income, balance sheet, cash flows)
- Cash flow analysis with projections and variances
- Aging reports for receivables and payables
- Reimbursement/voucher status updates
- Budget-to-actual variance reports for ULR and ULREDC
- Monthly reconciliations of all accounts
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA or Master’s preferred; equivalent experience considered
- Minimum 5 years of experience in nonprofit finance with supervisory responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of development accounting and managing multiple entities
- Proficiency with Fund EZ, SAGE, and other accounting software
- Advanced skills in Excel and financial reporting

Internal and External Relationships
- Internal: Collaborate with the President & CEO, Leadership Team, and Board of Directors to develop financial policy, track performance, and support strategic goals. Provide financial guidance to staff and ensure fiscal compliance across departments.
- External: Manage relationships with funders, auditors, vendors, financial institutions, insurance providers, and other key partners.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
- Standard in-person office environment.
