A key function within the Operations function, is the Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) Team. The HSW Team are responsible for leading, advising and coordinating HSW matters and strive to impact a positive safety culture across Garvan, The Kinghorn Cancer Centre joint venture, Australian BioResources and Garvan Research Foundation, being two wholly owned subsidiaries and influencing more broadly across the St Vincent’s precinct partners. The HSW Team is responsible for workplace health and safety, injury management, wellbeing, compliance and biosafety.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Health, Safety & Wellbeing Manager will lead the HSW Team in a continuous improvement safety culture program, whilst having overall responsibility for the Health, Safety & Wellbeing governance and system frameworks. The Health, Safety & Wellbeing Manager will partner with the Garvan Leadership Team and key stakeholders including People & Culture, to provide coaching and subject-matter expert advice to ensure Garvan achieves a high standard of workplace safety, injury management, risk management and is positioned to comply with all related legislative requirements. The Health & Safety Culture Manager will put people at the heart of health, safety & wellbeing.
This position is responsible for reporting HSW activity and performance to the Garvan Leadership Team (GLT) and Board of Directors.
Salary: Up to $170,000 + 12% super + salary packaging (depending on experience)
Employment Type: Permanent full-time

WHAT YOU WILL DO
The key responsibilities include:
Leading, coaching and developing the HSW Team
Positively influence, and advise people leaders and staff on health and safety matters, requirements under WHS legislation, and drive forward the agenda for positive health and safety culture in the workplace
Ensuring strong Health, Safety & Wellbeing strategies, training and programs are in place to support health & safety, wellbeing and injury management application across Garvan and drive continuous improvement
Developing, implementing and guiding the Health and Safety Management Frameworks
Developing, implementing and guiding Injury Management Frameworks
Developing, implementing and guiding Emergency Management and Incident Response policies and procedures
Undertaking Chief Warden role when required
Lead the wellbeing strategy (including psychosocial risk programs)
Providing safety leadership, direction and guidance across Garvan
Establishing key relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure HSW requirements are developed, implemented and reviewed on a regular basis
Maintain current, extensive knowledge of relevant legislative requirements and ensure internal understanding through communication and training
Support the facilitation of robust investigations into safety related incidents and events
Provide regular reporting and insights to the GLT and Board of Directors to assist with adhering to due diligence
Development and implementation of HSW programs
All staff are required to comply with Garvan’s workplace polices (as amended from time to time) and especially Garvan’s Work Health & Safety (WHS) Policy, including working in accordance with the WHS management system at all times, as safety is Garvan’s number one priority.
ABOUT YOU
The key skills and experience include:
The role requires a comprehensive knowledge and understanding in WHS Legislation (Acts, Regulations and Codes of Practice), Risk Management and Injury Management
Strong communication and well-developed interpersonal skillsExperience in the development and implementation of Health and Safety Management Systems
Experience in management of worker’s compensation claims and RTW Coordinator
Knowledge and technical skills in risk management
Knowledge and experience in a Medical Research Institute or innovative scientific research environment is desirable
Minimum 5 years working as an experienced health and safety specialist with at least 2 years at a management or supervisor level
