Position Summary:
The Program Coordinator is part of the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center (BCC) within the Student Affairs division at Vanderbilt University and is a key contributor responsible for executing the collaborative mission of the BCC and ensuring that the Center engages key partners and constituencies to support student development at Vanderbilt. This position works closely with the Director of the BCC to ensure the fulfilment of the Center’s mission alongside campus partners in Belonging and Communities, Housing and Residential Experience, Student Engagement and Leadership, and Community Standards & Student Support. Reporting directly to the Director of the BCC, the Program Coordinator supports the expanding array of collaboration and outreach efforts that engage with Black students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The mission of the center is to enhance the Vanderbilt experience of students, faculty, and staff by providing effective programming and resources that highlight Black history, accomplishments, culture, and address the academic, cultural, well-being, and social needs of our community, all while promoting belonging and creating community for all people at Vanderbilt.
Belonging and Communities is an area within the Student Affairs division and is comprised of the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center, KC Potter Center for LGBTQI Life, the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life, and the Student Center for Belonging and Communities.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:
Collaborative Programming and Partnerships
- Partner with campus partners in Student Affairs and other divisions within the university to create collaborative programing that meets the needs of Vanderbilt students and aligns with the BCC mission.
- Partner with student organizations and individual students to create collaborative programming that meets the needs of Vanderbilt students and aligns with the BCC mission.
- Conduct outreach within the campus community to grow the BCC’s network of Campus partners that we with engage for programming.
- Manage logistics for BCC partnerships and collaborations; This includes, but is not limited to securing venues, contacting speakers/facilitators, technical equipment and other A/V needs.
- Ensure that BCC partnerships and collaborations are registered in Anchorlink and on the University event calendar.
- Ensure that attendance data is collected for all BCC partnerships and collaborations.
- Work with BCC Graduate Assistant to ensure all collaborative programs are marketed and promoted effectively using social media, listservs, print advertising and more.
Student Support and Development
- Stay abreast of and informed about current trends in higher education and student development and infuse this knowledge into intentional program development and student advising to ensure our practices are both relevant and evidence based.
- Periodically meet with students to engage in meaningful conversations to identify potential issues that students might be facing and connect them with partners who address those needs or communicate those needs to others on the BCC team or at the institution.
- Serve as advisor of BCC Student committees such as Black Homecoming Committee, Blackness and the Great Outdoors.
- Serve as the advisor of one of the Registered Student Organizations under the BCC portfolio; African Student Union, Black Student Association, Carrribean Student Association.
Administration and Management
- Maintain budgets for BCC co-sponsorships across campus partners and student organizations, and keep BCC team informed of new co-sponsorships.
- Maintain schedule for BCC Resource Room Hours ensuring that campus partners are informed and prepared for their time in the resource room.
- Submit reports about BCC collaborations and partnerships at the end of each semester.
- Complete institutional expense reports.
Institutional, Divisional, and Department Administration
- Contribute to the broader mission and objectives of Student Affairs and the University by serving on divisional and institutional committees, task forces, and working groups.
- Actively participate in key divisional initiatives and events, including Move-In Day and all-division meetings and gatherings.
- Maintain a working knowledge of relevant university policies, procedures, and systems—such as those related to travel, procurement, expense, and time reporting—to ensure effective, compliant, and responsible operations.
Demonstrate a collaborative spirit by supporting divisional colleagues and engaging in efforts that advance shared goals and strategic priorities.
Supervisory Relationships:
This position will not have any supervisory responsibilities, This position reports administratively and functionally to the Director of the BCC.
Education and Certifications:
- A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
- Master’s Degree in a related field is strongly preferred.
Experience and Skills:
- At least twelve months of relevant experience is necessary.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Black issues, history, and culture in general and as they relate to and impact the experience of Black students, faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and staff in higher education is preferred.
- Competency working with students of different cultural, ethnic, racial, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication, including public speaking and group meeting facilitation is preferred.
- Demonstrated skill for collaboration across interdisciplinary and functional units is strongly preferred.
- Evidence of effective communication, time management, collaboration, and essential operational procedures (budgeting, policy development, etc.) is preferred.
