Job Description:

The Mount Holyoke College Equestrian Center is seeking a dedicated and experienced Stable Assistant to join our team. This essential, hands-on role is critical to the daily success of our program, focusing on providing high-quality care for our equine partners and maintaining a safe, organized, and professional stable environment for our students, boarders, and visitors.

This position is an Essential Worker role, requiring work in all weather conditions and on holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide daily, individualized care for horses, including: feeding (hay, grain, and supplements according to individualized cards), ensuring access to fresh water, managing turnout and bring-in schedules, and tracking and communicating supplement inventory needs.

  • Cleaning and maintaining 10–13 horse stalls daily.

  • Mucking paddocks and raking surrounding areas.

  • Sweeping aisles, cleaning wash stalls, and general tidiness.

  • Moving and organizing feed, hay, and bedding.

  • Removing trash and conducting regular cobwebbing/dusting.

  • Operating barn equipment such as tractors and manure wagons (or a willingness to learn).

  • Assisting with regular facility maintenance and seasonal preparations (e.g., dragging arenas, raking walkways).

  • Collaborate effectively with other staff to ensure smooth daily operations.

  • Supervise and provide guidance to student workers as assigned.

  • Communicate regularly and proactively with the Associate Director regarding horse care and facility needs.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Demonstrated previous experience in horse handling, husbandry, and general farm work.

  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Willingness to work in all weather and on holidays.

  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to operate and learn Google Sheets and Forms.

Preferred:

  • Experience operating a tractor and other farm equipment.

  • Experience with arena dragging and general arena maintenance.

  • Knowledge of equine first aid and emergency procedures.

  • Experience working in a professional equine boarding or lesson facility.

Hiring Range: $21.44 - $23.58
