About the Department
This position works 40 hours per week.
WHO MAY APPLY (OPEN & PROMOTIONAL): This recruitment is open to all candidates meeting the minimum requirements. Priority consideration will be given to Spokane County employees in a position covered by the PROTEC17 bargaining unit applying prior to 10/15/25.
The position allocated to this class performs work as a heavy equipment operator and is responsible for safely and efficiently loading solid waste materials for transfer as well as performing a variety of other job duties involved in transfer station tipping floor operations, including routine daily preventative maintenance. This position may also be allocated as a Roll-Off Truck Driver for periods of time. Work is performed under the direction of Transfer Station Site Supervisor and the Transfer Stations Operations Manager.
Work may be performed at either location.

TOTAL COMPENSATION: $65,485 TO $91,214. Total compensation is an estimate based upon base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, and leave). The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.
Position Duties
- Safely and efficiently operates various solid waste equipment such as front loaders, pre-load compactor, fixed crane, backhoes, yard trucks/trailer combinations, skid-steers, forklifts, and sweepers.
- May be assigned Roll-Off Truck driving duties for periods of time, provided a CDL B has been issued to employee.
- Visually screens incoming loads of material for acceptability and directs or assists customers in a courteous and professional manner to move materials to proper drop off location.
- Provides information and assistance to customers in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner regarding disposal and recycling procedures, fees, rules, policies, and options.
- Operates other equipment as needed for Transfer Station operations.
- Performs daily safety checks, maintenance, fueling, and inspection of the equipment. Maintains time and equipment records.
- Advises supervisor or a designee and/or the appropriate department as to potential hazards or needed repairs to the facility or equipment.
- Performs a wide range of transfer station tasks including work on the active tipping floor and other areas such as household hazardous waste, recycling, and appliance drop off locations.
- Performs cleaning, sweeping, and litter pick up to keep facility and site in a presentable and clean condition.
- Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
- May be required to perform duties of lower-level personnel as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Three (3) years of work experience. 2 years related to Transfer Station Operations or related field operating heavy equipment and/or machinery.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience (equivalent to 3 years) that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
- Possession of a valid driver's license at time of employment and for duration of employment.
- OSHA HazMat Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire date.
- Possession of a CDL Class B, is preferred, but not required at time of appointment.
