Job Summary:
The Director of Nursing, under the supervision of the Chief Nursing officers, is responsible for the comprehensive administration of ICU, In-House Registry, Staff Education, Nurse Practitioners, Agency staff and clinical project leadership as assigned. The Director shapes and interprets the philosophy and definition of nursing as it relates to short and long-term planning, program and staff development, resource and budget management, quality assurance, and systems utilization. Assumes 24-hour accountability for unit(s) operation. Oversees education and career progression for the entire hospital. Represents nursing leadership at various internal, medical staff and external meetings and activities as assigned. Assumes full responsibility for clinical leadership in absence of CNO. After one year of service, this position serves as a part of our CNO in training program.
Essential Functions:
- Project leadership/management.
- Serves in absence of CNO.
- Services on Committees such as operational committee and Med Staff.
- Supervises and evaluates quality of patient care provided and the skill level and pride values of staff. Identifies competencies requiring review, updating, and annual testing.
- Serves as a role model in clinical excellence for the unit(s) staff through provision of quality patient care as necessary. Provides direction to the staff in the implementation of the nursing process. Serves as patient advocate.
- Participates with Senior Executives, Nursing and Medical staff to define unit specific goals and objectives. Interprets and directs the development, implementation, and evaluation of unit goals and objectives, policies/procedures, and standards of care.
- Plans for staffing of responsible units by developing and adjusting staffing patterns based on patient classification data and/or unit(s) guidelines where classification is not available. Assures that staff assignments are consistent with patient care requirements.
- Facilitates the development of feasible standards of care and practice, including the integration/networking with agencies/services along the continuum of care.
- Evaluates patient/physician satisfaction and problem solves to improve.
- Maintains, supervises, evaluates, and develops unit management team and ensures appropriate development of each manager. Assist managers to development unit staff. Has full authority to discipline and terminate as necessary. Provides managers and staff with informal and formal feedback on their performance.
- Promotes patient safety by ensuring staff is educated and compliant on all required safety methods as well as internal policies.
- Ensures all staff has been provided an in-depth departmental orientation by assisting or directing the orientation process specific to the areas of responsibility. Assist the CNS and NM with assessing, planning, directing, and evaluating educational and clinical professional development.
- Determines personnel, material, equipment, and facilities needed to accomplish program goals and to streamline operational systems to improve service efficiency and effectiveness.
- Participates in the development, implementing and updating of the strategic plan specific to the areas of responsibility.
- Prepares, monitors, and maintains annual operating and capital budgets consistent with the organization’s financial goals, reimbursement trends and current and/or projected standards of care. Prepares monthly reports and assures cost-effective and appropriate utilization of resources.
- Meets or exceeds legal and regulatory compliance/standards with all external regulatory bodies as well as internal hospital policies.
- Participates in professional organizations or peer networks. Serves as contributing member on assigned councils, committees, programs, and task forces.
- Responsible for self-development and improvement by utilizing a continuing education process to retain effectiveness and credibility as a clinical resource to hospital management team and staff.

Requirements
Experience:
- Ten years clinical RN experience
- Five years of experience as a director or nursing administrator.
- Average computer skills necessary to access patient databases, e-mail systems, etc.
- Knowledge of JCAHO, IDPH, and other regulatory bodies
- Ability to assess needs, identify problems, explore alternatives and implement solutions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Effective problem-solving skills
- Proven ability to inspire leadership skills in all nursing positions and facilitate a team environment.
Education:
- BSN required; MSN preferred
Licensure/Certifications:
- Current Professional Nurse License issued and/or recognized by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas
- BLS and ACLS
