Role Summary

The Nurse Practitioner serves as a primary medical caregiver for students within the university community. This role provides direct health care, promotes public health education, and collaborates with physicians and other staff to ensure quality patient care. The position combines clinical responsibilities with educational and leadership duties to support both individual students and the broader campus community.

Examples of Work Performed

Clinical Care:

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic conditions.
  • Conduct physical exams, obtain medical histories, and order/prescribe medications.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, review test results, and provide referrals.

 

Patient Education & Advocacy:

  • Explain diagnoses, procedures, and treatment risks/benefits.
  • Provide health information and advocate for preventive care.
  • Deliver public health education through patient contact, group sessions, and campus initiatives.

 

Collaboration & Leadership:

  • Partner with physicians for complex cases.
  • Lead staff development and assist the Director in shaping clinical services.
  • Serve on committees to support public health vigilance and institutional safety.

 

Administrative Duties:

  • Ensure accurate and complete medical documentation.
  • Participate in defining nursing roles in clinical operations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned 

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following.  Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Assess, diagnoses and treats acute and chronic health conditions utilizing various medical practices and medications.
2. Provides follow-up care and evaluates effectiveness of care.
3. Develops, implements, collects data and evaluates primary health care services as directed by individual care plans.
4. Develops individualized care plans based on medical assessments in accordance with medical best practices and established rules and regulations.
5. Educates patients and their support systems on how to manage conditions and to promote the health and well-being of patients and those around them.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education: A Masters Degree in Nursing from a Nurse Practitioner program in an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience related to the above describe duties.

Certification: Must be licensed by the Mississippi Board of Nursing.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in assessing, diagnosing, and managing eating disorders in a clinical setting
