CMU Technician, Part-Time, 12 Hours Flex, Centralized Telemetry

UC Health is hiring a part-time CMU Technician for the CMU department at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. 

The Cardiac Technician provides basic direct patient care as delegated by clinical professional personnel in accordance with delegation law and rules and current education.  The Cardiac Technician maintains an orderly, clean, and safe environment for patients and visitors.

The CMU Technician provides indirect patient care by observing cardiac monitors for abnormalities in heart rate or rhythm or equipment malfunctions. This may include the management of the Telemetry ECG equipment and the collection, cleaning, and maintenance of Telemetry ECG equipment utilized to monitor patient’s cardiac rhythms and/or SpO2 status in accordance with delegation law and rules and current education. The CMU Technician may cover breaks for staff monitoring patients with telemetry orders in the acute care setting.

Responsibilities

Patient Population - (CLINICAL ONLY):
•    Engages in population appropriate communication.
•    Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
•    Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
•    Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
•    Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
•    Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
•    Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
•    Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
•    Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.

Patient Care:
•    Provides all patient care in a manner that is culturally based and age-specific.
•    Accurately record information in the appropriate logbook
•    Observes cardiac monitors for abnormalities in heart rate and rhythm or equipment malfunctions and accurately documents and communicates heart rhythms to caregivers.  
•    Observe SpO2 and non-invasive blood pressure monitors.  
•    Responds immediately and appropriately to emergency situations via Telemetry Policy.
•    Effectively applies equipment to patients including telemetry, and SpO2  monitor with special attention to age-specific factors such as altered learning needs secondary to diminished sensory capacity.  
•    Assists in troubleshooting signal problems and acts as a resource to the RN regarding signal quality and systems management.

Safety Measures:
•    Ensures telemetry equipment is cleaned per unit guidelines for patient use. 
•    Ensures telemetry equipment is tested and in proper working order for patient use.
•    Uses proper body mechanics and universal precautions.
•    Participates in the continuous quality improvement program and utilizes the information to further enhance the quality of patient care offered.

Communication:
•    Communicates patient observations to RN timely and appropriately records. 
•    Records measurements and patient data. 
•    Reception and phone duties, as directed.
•    Utilizes effective communication and maintains confidentiality in interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and/or other members of the health care team.

Environment:
•    Facilitates the maintenance of a clean, safe, and organized environment for patients and coworkers. 
•    Removes equipment when no longer in use to appropriate area for cleaning.
•    Re-orders and stocks materials as necessary.
•    Assist with filing when time permits.
•    Reports maintenance issues.

Teamwork:

•    Demonstrates helpfulness, cooperation, and respect for team members in pursuit of unprecedented patient care.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED

LICENSE & CERTIFICATION:

  • BLS

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum Required: 0-6 months of experience required
  • Preferred: 1-2 years equivalent experience
