This position is central to the missionaries’ purpose to “Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.” The role is an entry-level individual contributor, responsible for providing language support to in-field groups and helping to develop language curriculum.
Responsibilities
Reports to Mgr, Curriculum 2.
1. Assist with language-learning curriculum and products for pre-MTC, Missionary Training Center (MTC), and in-field training. Responsibilities include helping to:
a. Develop, update, or design language curriculum.
b. Conduct pilot testing.
c. Implement adjustments.
d. Provide support to stakeholders.
e. Manage projects.
2. Oversee and provide language support to in-field groups.
• Works to resolve issues, answer questions, and provide support to area leaders, mission leaders, language coordinators, and missionaries for missionary language resources, including:
i. EnglishConnect for Missionaries
ii. BYU–Pathway Worldwide
iii. Language Development Report
iv. Elicited Imitation (EI) language assessment
v. Language Self-Assessment (LSA)
vi. In-field language tutoring and mentoring programs
• Record interactions, and tracks and reports issues.
• Ensure that language support documentation, training, tools, reports, and associated materials are functioning properly and up to date.
• Collaborate and coordinates with partners to resolve issues.
• Support area leaders, mission leaders, and language coordinators on resources to help missionaries learn their mission language.
Qualifications
Required:
• 1 year of full-time experience with second-language teaching, ESL, or TESOL. Familiarity with second-language teaching methods and an openness to new approaches.
• Excellence in communicating professionally and clearly, both verbally and written.
• Technical writing experience.
• Analytical, creative, detail-oriented, and proactive skills, and the ability to work well with ambiguity and pressure.
• Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Strong ability to cooperate and to give and receive input from others.
• Strong ability to follow directions and align with leaders.
• Proficiency in a non-native language.
• Aptitude for learning and successfully using new software applications.
• To perform the essential functions, there may be physical requirements such as sitting for long periods or using monitors or other equipment.
Preferred:
• Master’s degree in a related field.
• Experience working with mission leaders, language coordinators, and missionaries.
• Familiarity with current missionary language resources.
• Familiarity with current missionary language curriculum.
• Experience teaching a second language in a professional setting (MTC, university, or high school).
• Coursework or experience in curriculum development.
