About the Department
This is the fourth of five levels in the Animal Care Series.
This position is a public health, safety, and law enforcement position involving the responsibility for protection to the community citizens and animals. General supervision is received from the Operations Supervisor, as well as the Director.
Position Duties

- Coordinate and supervise the kennel staff duties, and activities pertaining to cleaning, feeding, medication/wellness and general documentation of incoming and outgoing animals.Dispositions of animals will include:wellness, illness, euthanasia, and disposal and otherwise, as deemed necessary.
- Supervise, prioritize task and projects, coach and train staff.Monitor operations according to procedures making recommendations for improved work duties. Analyze and evaluate staff and implement solutions. Work with Vet to relay staff concerns and utilize Vet recommendations.Oversee inventory and ordering of shelter supplies.
- Coordinate and supervise animal health checks and medical care with the Animal Care Technician and Adoption Program Coordinator. Care for sick, injured, healthy and all general population of animals.Maintain best measures to prevent disease and cross-contamination of disease.Provide information to the public regarding rabies control methods including kennel inspections and proper compliance according to the Rabies Control Act.
- Provide safety meetings as necessary. Required to teach best methods for employee safety when handling animals and disease, including the decapitation process of suspected rabid animals and transporting to state department.
- Respond to required investigations of cruelty to animals, and nuisance animal complaints when necessary.Appear in court as a witness when subpoenaed.Serve as a back up to Animal Services Officers for investigations, tranquilizing, and emergencies.
- Prepare reports and documentation data for the Director, Operations Supervisor, or Animal Care Technician/Adoption Program Coordinator, as needed. Prepare and maintain files, records and statistical data that includes but is not limited to: animal population, adoption, euthanasia, spay/neuter, and general incident reporting.Maintains controlled substance records.
- Monitors expenses in relation to needs and review procedures to maintain an efficient and effective service within budgetary restrictions.
- Work with local and national rescue animal welfare groups which may include home inspections under the direction of the Director. Develops and maintains work relationships with other agencies and organizations.Fulfills speaking engagements and media relations when asked.
- Perform related work, as required and any other duties as deemed necessary by the Director.
This position directly supervises kennel activities in the Animal Services Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Parish's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree and three years experience working with animals; or equivalent combination of education and experience to satisfy the minimum requirements for the position.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Valid Driver's License as per State law or requirement
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office "Special Commission"
CAET (Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician) Certification
DEQ - Crematory Operator Certification
Cruelty Investigation Training - (IC. HSUS-ACCI, AHA Cruelty Investigator's School, Cruelty School).

- Ability to work alone or in a group.
- Willingness to be vaccinated for the prevention of rabies (pre-exposure vaccinations).
- Ability to deal with stressful and sometimes hostile circumstances.
- Working knowledge of Calcasieu Parish streets and roads.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively with citizens, public officials, and employees of the Parish.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to enter data and general software applications of shelter type software applications.

- The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
An employee in this position will be supplied with a uniform, provided by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury. The employee is responsible for abiding by the Police Jury's Uniform Agreement.
