Position Summary

Charlottesville City Schools is seeking caring, dependable, and flexible Substitute Instructional Assistants (IAs) to support students and classrooms when regular staff are absent. Substitute IAs work under the direction of teachers and school staff to assist with instruction, supervision, and daily routines, ensuring that students continue to learn and thrive in a safe and positive environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in providing instructional support to students in both whole-group and small-group settings.

  • Support students’ individual learning, behavior, and social-emotional needs.

  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, lunchrooms, playgrounds, and other school settings to maintain safety and order.

  • Provide additional support for students with disabilities as directed by special education staff.

  • Help implement classroom routines and reinforce expectations for behavior and engagement.

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, and other staff.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure smooth school operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or higher preferred.

  • Experience working with children in an educational, childcare, or youth program setting is preferred.

  • Ability to follow teacher and staff directions and adapt to changing needs.

  • Strong communication, patience, and interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and the success of all students.
