Description

As a seasonal/intern at the District, you’ll assist with research studies and mosquito surveillance activities to inform and improve District operations as follows:

  • A combination of field and laboratory work
  • Adult mosquito trapping, larval sampling, mosquito identification, data entry, and other operational and research tasks as necessary
  • You’ll learn about the principles of integrated mosquito management, mosquito trapping and surveillance, pesticide resistance, mosquito biology, disease surveillance, and taxonomy
  • You’ll also have the opportunity to obtain a Public Health Pest Control License. This is an ideal position for students interested in pursuing senior research related to mosquito control

 

The District

Collier Mosquito Control District covers 730 square miles in Southwest Florida, between the Gulf of America and the Everglades. We are a team of dedicated professionals working to protect public health through innovative and science-driven mosquito control strategies. As a Research Student Intern, you will collaborate with experts in Operations and Research, gaining exposure to a variety of projects.

 

Requirements

  • Coursework or experience in the natural sciences, biology, public health or related fields
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record to drive a District vehicle as provided and required for the position at time of hire
  • Must be able to read, communicate, write, and type in English
  • Basic computer skills including familiarity with Word and Excel
  • Ability to work outdoors under challenging conditions (high temperatures and humidity, swampy terrain, biting insects)
  • Ability and willingness to learn and execute new skills quickly and efficiently
  • Must be eligible to work in the US

 

Position Details:

  • Hours & Schedule:
     Work 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, holidays and weekends as needed
  • Internship Duration:
     The internship begins January 12, 2026, and continues through May 1, 2026, offering participants a comprehensive and hands-on experience designed to build skills, knowledge, and professional growth.
  • This is an in-person position


This position requires frequent handling of pesticides and fieldwork in remote areas in the hot and humid environment of Southwest Florida with exposure to biting insects and hazardous wildlife as part of a team.
