As a Pettibone Operator, you are responsible for operating heavy or specialized equipment to stack and load coated 25' to 80', 12" to 24" diameter pipe. Performing this job requires extreme skill with a Pettibone to avoid damaging the coating on pipe as well as correctly determining the loads and balances, in a safe and efficient manner.
Responsibilities:
- Operate Pettibone to load and stack coated pipe, delicately handle coated pipe without damaging coating and stabilize pipe immediately after staging to prevent roll, and ensure correct pipe is put in correct location.
- Unload coated pipe from the plant and put in correct location in the yard or load onto a rail car or truck, to relevant railroad specifications.
- Coordinate ground spotters and other support personnel and ensure operating area is clear and safe.
- Check timbers for debris, such as nails, lose screws, gravel.
- Calculate and load correct weight distributions and balances on outbound trucks and rail cars.
- Perform visual inspection of material/finished goods for defects prior to loading on outbound trucks.
- Perform daily pre-shift checks of all equipment and identify any issues with tires, fluid levels, operational controls, fork surfaces, and any other relevant issues, as well as ensure daily paperwork is filled out and turned in.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience, Education and License Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 5 years’ experience in an industrial setting required.
- 2 years’ experience operating Pettibone’s handling the same or similar sized pipe required, loading coated pipe a plus.
- Must become LB Foster certified to handle coated pipe in a Pettibone and maintain certification to operate all mobile equipment on site.
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to operate heavy equipment (i.e., Pettibone “super 25”) and awareness of heavy equipment’s rated capacity.
- Ability to work safely in a fast-paced environment and to follow detailed instructions.
- Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
- Skilled in placing pipe/coated pipe on railcars or trucks without damage and to handle 80’ long pieces of coated pipe in tight surroundings.
- Demonstrated competence in meeting weight restrictions of loads by calculating pipe weight per piece.
- Ability to exert up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Good visual acuity.
- Must be willing and able to work schedule changes on short notice.
- Must be able to work in outdoor environment in all types of weather.
