POSITION SUMMARY
The Kitchen Steward is responsible to assist the Director and the Chef with the preparation of food and with the maintenance of the kitchen and dining room, keeping them in a clean, orderly and safe condition at all times in compliance with local and state health department requirements.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include all the following according to shift/assignment:
- Assists Director and Chef with daily meal preparation and overall cleanliness.
- Washes all pots and pans and returns them cleaned to designated area.
- Ensures dishes, silver and serving pieces are always clean and in the proper places at mealtimes.
- Maintains and ensure cleanliness of beverage bar and machines with juice, coffee and tea.
- Refills coffee, juice and milk machine as needed.
- Cleans floors, vacuums carpet in dining room and maintains dining room orderliness.
- Acts as food runner at mealtimes for hot and cold food as needed.
- Helps to fill and clean condiment station and table condiments as designated by chef on duty.
- Prepares all dish room duties.
- Cleans and organizes all kitchen workstations and equipment.
- Cleans and sanitizes thoroughly all pots, pans and kitchen equipment and utensils and ensures their proper storage.
- Removes trash bags, cleans trash cans and breaks down cardboard boxes for disposal.
- Keeps kitchen and serving area floors clean and dry.
- Ensures clean and orderly condition of stoves, ovens and all kitchen equipment.
- Keeps inside windows, walls and doors in kitchen and always break room clean - orderly.
- Washes kitchen mats nightly.
- Cleans back dock and dumpster pad and keeps dumpster doors closed after their shift.
- Mops kitchen, serving areas, cooler, stockroom and bathroom each night.
- Cleans air filters in hood weekly.
- Maintains milk dispenser including cleaning and stocking.
- Complies with all local and state health requirements on sanitation, safe handling and storage of food.
- Ensures that a welcoming, safe and healing environment is maintained for each patient and family throughout the continuum of care.
- Recommends ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.
- Makes change and accepts meal payments.
- Maintains confidentiality of company and patient information.
- Reacts productively to change.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements

JOB SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED required and/or a one (1) year food service related experience equivalent preferred.
- Experience with cutlery and commercial kitchen equipment
- Completion of Metro health department food handlers safety and sanitation course is required.
- Ability to problem-solve, analyze, and interpret information.
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and patient needs in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to be open and culturally sensitive to a wide variety of patients’ care issues.
- Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively speak, read and write in English.
- Ability to interact with co-workers in a collaborative and courteous manner while providing guidance, instruction, and training.
- If recovering, one year of verifiable abstinence required with active participation in an appropriate twelve-step program preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Position is in a kitchen setting that involves associated risks or discomforts requiring safety precautions and external occupational setting that involves exposure to weather conditions (i.e., cold, heat, rain, snow or ice).
- Position requires frequent contact with people in crisis, including those who are emotionally volatile and may require additional safety precautions.
- Position is subject to varying and/or extended shifts, including weekends as well as staying overnight for inclement weather as part of critical staffing.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and/or push pull up to 100 lbs. multiple times a day; move around campus on uneven and rural terrain; run or climb stairs in a rapid manner.
- Ability of constant use of manual dexterity, coordination, mobility, visual discrimination, hearing and concentration
- Ability to speak, hear, see, sit, walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and use fine/gross motor skills.
