Job Summary
The Painter/ Grinder Technician is responsible for finishing operations, including painting, grinding, and sanding, to welded and machined assemblies with a focus on quality.
Essential Job Functions
- Grinding of welds per drawing, shop orders and welder’s instructions using various grinding tools to break or smooth sharp edges of finished assemblies
- Operation of power tools including large electric and air powered grinders and large belt grinders
- Basic inspection of welded and machined parts & assemblies to ensure quality workmanship
- Apply primer and/or paint processes as needed per shop orders and specifications including the handling, use, storage, and disposal of volatile, flammable and combustible materials. (Paint, Primer, Cleaning solvents (MEK & Acetone)
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized grinding workstation, paint booth and paint prep area
- Use proper PPE as noted in the employee handbook and as required based on the task
- Notify the responsible welder or supervisor of defects seen during course of work
- Report exact time spent at each work-center on the corresponding shop order
- Maintain shop order paperwork and turn them into the shop supervisor when work is complete
- Keep tools used with stainless steel and aluminum separate from those used on mild steel keeping them free of contamination
- Passivation of completed stainless steel assemblies using Citric Acid passivator
- Clean assemblies of excess galvanizing and repair galvanizing as needed
- Operate the forklift as needed to transport materials and parts
- Prepare surface for further finishing
- Other grinding, sanding or polishing duties as required
Requirements
- Ability to work with minimal supervision on assigned tasks.
- Must have a strong focus on safety and quality.
- Ability to use basic measuring & inspection tools such as measuring tapes, square, calipers, go / no go gauges & radius gauges.
- Organizational, problem solving, and follow-through skills.
- Basic ability to read mechanical (CAD) drawings.
- Good mechanical aptitude.
Education and Experience
- Completion of high school or equivalent
- English communication ability both verbal and written
- One year or more shop experience using multiple grinding and finishing tools
- Basic industrial painting experience a plus
Physical Requirement
- Required to wear PPE as needed
- Close visual acuity with or without corrective lenses
