Job Summary

Battelle’s National Security Business Unit is seeking a Wastewater Management Technician Specialist to support Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) efforts to treat and manage water at an operational fire training facility. This position supports the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) and is located on-site at Tyndall Air Force Base, near Panama City, FL. 

 

The Technician Specialist will be a self-starter with experience in processes and systems for water handling, wastewater management, and analysis of water from treatment processes. The candidate should demonstrate broad applied science and engineering skills that include practical expertise in areas that include (but not limited to) chemical, electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Works on assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment, creativity and initiative are required to identify the problem and provide input into a solution.
  • Performs moderately complex analysis to verify the accuracy, applicability and reasonableness of project work. Identifies ways to control and/or reduce costs and/or improve performance without negatively impacting client expectations.  Contributes to the technical planning of project work including recommending and implementing improved methods for new approaches. May provide input and justification for capital equipment purchases.  Responsible for various types of equipment, maintenance, and oversight of facilities.
    • Maintain water concentration systems (such as thermal evaporators) in working order, ensure required maintenance, trouble shoot and conduct out-of-cycle maintenance, and provide insight and input on protocols and process optimization
  • Provides input and recommendations to Project Managers on time and resources.
  • Completes complex tasks under minimal supervision or guidance. Plans and performs project work from a basic understanding of objectives and work statements. Tracks progress against identified milestones and reports to supervisor any deviations from the plan.
  • Monitor filtration stations and clean out or change out filtration materials as needed. Collect filtration materials in drums and coordinate processing through the base hazardous materials collection point for removal. 
  • Additional responsibilities may include Hazardous Materials monitoring, including working with vendor contractors for processing
  • This position is co-located with a fire research group and work may include support of RDT&E, including, but not limited to, setup and tear down of test equipment and activities, setting up cameras, assisting with mixing firefighting agents in tanks, cleanup of fire test equipment and area after test.
  • Candidates with industrial truck operator certification may also support connecting and disconnecting trailers, drive vehicles with trailers attached to and from test sites
  • Assisted engineers with construction of test apparatus, plumbing piping (metal/PVC)

Key Qualifications

  • Associate degree in related field; 7 years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.
  • May be expected to pursue various certifications or continuing educational units, as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to solve complex problems. 
  • Exhibits technical knowledge and troubleshooting skills to complete complex assignments.
  • Ability to generate and follow procedures of significant complexity. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding behind applications by creatively troubleshooting and correctly interpreting results.
