The Role
Are you ready to grow your career and apply your analytical skills to solve critical infrastructure challenges?
As an Associate Data Scientist on our team, you will play a crucial role in providing the data-driven insights that shape the future of Yarra Valley Water's assets. This is an opportunity to learn, collaborate, and make a tangible impact.
You will help transform complex operational, spatial, and customer data into practical tools and models that directly inform planning, maintenance, and investment decisions. Ultimately, your work will help improve asset reliability, optimise performance, and create lasting value for our customers, the environment, and the business. You'll be supported by senior data scientists, offering a clear path for technical and professional growth.
Your key responsibilities
- Work alongside senior colleagues to assist in the development, testing, and validation of predictive models (e.g., failure prediction, asset lifespan estimation).
- Apply foundational statistical and machine learning methods to explore and uncover meaningful patterns within asset performance data.
- Help translate analytical results into clear summaries and visualisations that effectively support business decision-making.
- Design and maintain Power BI dashboards to effectively track key asset performance metrics and communicate findings to non-technical users.
- Clean, prepare, and validate diverse datasets, including operational, spatial, and maintenance logs, ensuring high quality for analysis.
- Work closely with the data science team to understand data pipelines and assist in resolving data quality issues.
- Contribute to the documentation of datasets, model logic, and business rules, ensuring knowledge is easily shared and accessible across the team.
- Take initiative to continually build your skills across modelling, domain knowledge, and effective stakeholder engagement.
What we’re looking for
- A degree in a quantitative field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency in Python for data manipulation and analysis, with experience using libraries like pandas and NumPy.
- Exposure to core supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques (e.g., regression, classification) through academic study or project work.
- Basic working knowledge of SQL to efficiently extract, join, and filter data from relational databases.
- Some experience building charts or dashboards (e.g., Power BI is preferred), and an interest in communicating data visually.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with a passion for translating technical findings into meaningful business insights.
- Familiarity or willingness to learn modern data platforms (e.g., Databricks) or data pipeline tools.
