The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is hiring a Hospital Liaison to provide education and training to medical professionals on substance use disorders (SUD) and the impact on prenatal development in partnership with the Chesterfield County – City of Colonial Heights SUD/OAA team.  

What You Do and How You Do It:

As the Hospital Liaison, you will serve as a vital bridge between our agency and the healthcare community, ensuring that women with substance use disorders (SUD) receive the care they need. Your primary purpose is to provide education to medical professionals on a range of topics, including how to identify SUD, its neurological and developmental impact, and the importance of timely, appropriate referrals. You will provide direct, recovery-focused support to women by guiding them to the right level of care. This involves partnering with Community Service Boards and our Kinship Navigator to facilitate referrals, as well as providing warm handoffs and attending same-day access appointments to guarantee services are initiated. This role requires a high degree of collaboration and excellent customer service. You will develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, their families, coworkers, and external stakeholders, including county departments like Mental Health Support Services and local police. This position requires regular travel to hospitals and other medical facilities. You will also be responsible for tracking referral data for reporting and outcome measurement, and you are expected to uphold all confidentiality policies and laws. Perform other work as requred.

Here's What You Need:

  • Possession of Registered Nurse license in Virginia and in good standing with the Department of Health Professions required.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a substance use disorder setting as well as co-occurring mental illness and/or OBGYN setting required.
  • Considerable knowledge of substance use treatment and recovery providers/resources as well as principles of treatment and recovery required.
  • Or equivalent combination of training and experience

We’re Looking for Ideal Candidates Who Have:

  • Clinical Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of how substances impact the brain and overall functioning, including co-occurring mental health disorders and medical diagnoses.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent time management, verbal/written communication, and interviewing skills. The ability to develop therapeutic relationships and communicate respect, care, and concern to clients, family members, and other stakeholders.
  • Training & Communication: A strong ability to provide training to medical providers on substance use, treatment and recovery options, and related laws.

Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.  Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. A Chesterfield County application is also required and must be submitted online by the deadline.

This position is part of an Emergency Shelter Team during times of natural disaster, reporting to shelter duty as required.
