The Minnesota Star Tribune is an innovative modern media organization building on an extraordinary 158-year legacy. With seven Pulitzer Prizes and numerous other accolades, we stand as a beacon of journalistic excellence in Minnesota. We are the heart and voice of the North.
Our mission is to build a better Minnesota by connecting us with the people, ideas, and stories that strengthen our communities. We’re seeking dynamic leaders who are passionate about journalism and democracy to help shape this future. If you are excited about reinventing one of our state’s most trusted institutions and leading us into a new era of growth and excellence, we want to hear from you.
The We the People Internship is a 10-week paid summer opportunity for a University of Minnesota journalism student to conduct research and report on how public agencies in Minnesota serve the public. This position at our headquarters in Minneapolis MN is designed for students who want to explore the intersection of journalism, civic engagement and government.
Funded by University of Minnesota alumni Rebecca and John Siekmeier, the internship is intended to improve public understanding of how government works, and how it can work better. The Siekmeiers shared, “Our public agencies are expected to demonstrate scientific integrity as they provide effective stewardship of the land, water, air, and wildlife that will improve the health of the environment for future generations. To do this well, our agencies must collaborate in full partnership with the public and provide clear, easily accessible, and timely information that empowers the people with knowledge.”
Interns will be embedded in the Minnesota Star Tribune newsroom, mentored by experienced journalists, and supported in producing deeply reported, solutions-focused stories.
The term will be early June to early August. Interns will earn $21.25 per hour.
