The Director of Lateral Integration leads the onboarding and integration of individual member and shareholder lateral lawyers, lateral groups, and Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies professionals. Sitting within the firm’s Strategic Expansion Department, this role is responsible for ensuring a smooth transition, rapid ramp-up, and long-term success of our laterals. The Director will be tasked with creating a welcoming culture where new hires can get up to speed quickly and thrive in their new environment. The Director will also work with stakeholders across the firm to create processes that drive lateral success and maximize productivity.
Responsibilities
- Collaborates with internal administrative departments, including HR, IS, Finance, Facilities, Case Management, Office of General Counsel, and others to convey a new lateral’s needs and leads a customized onboarding process specific to the needs of the lateral(s) complete with training and welcoming activities.
- Collaborate with firm management, department and practice group chairs, office managing partners, existing lawyers and Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies professionals, and administrative departments to ensure successful transition and assimilation into the firm’s culture.
- Partner with new lateral lawyers and firm’s marketing department professionals to execute individualized integration plans, including business development and internal and external marketing efforts.
- Leads Lateral Integration Committee consisting of existing firm lawyers serving as integration point persons for their respective departments, the firm’s Strategic Expansion team, and the Chief Marketing Officer.
- Informally meets with lateral at regular intervals beginning at once a week to once a month for a full year.
- Formally meets with lateral, Department Chairs and marketing team on a periodic basis.
- Establish synergies among existing lawyers and new lateral lawyers whose practices intersect by industry and/or client bases by planning internal events, activities, and targeted, individual meetings and office visits.
- Suggests actions based on meetings and reports for improved integration and completes any necessary follow-up.
- Assists with the establishment of new offices when combining with lateral lawyer groups.
- Maintain data on lateral hires to compare the firm’s success against industry norms, produce reports designed to track the firm’s success and need for further integration efforts, and determine trends that may predict success and inform the firm’s lateral recruitment efforts.
- Stay current on integration advancements within the legal industry and comparative industries to further evolve the firm’s integration process.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; JD or prior law firm experience strongly preferred
- Minimum of five (5) years recruiting and professional development experience, preferably in a legal environment, or strong administrative background including supervisory responsibilities.
- Maintains confidentiality at all times.
- Uses discretion, good judgment and tact.
- Works well independently and on a team.
- Shows initiative and attention to detail.
- Works well under pressure and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Possesses excellent communication skills, especially in written communications and reports.
- Highly organized and efficient.
- Willingness to travel
