Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) is seeking a fisheries biologist to support National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) in Seattle, WA.  OAI is a Virginia corporation established in 2003 that provides consulting and technical services to the U.S. government, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and the private sector. We specialize in scientific program and project management, strategic planning, professional and technical services, and stakeholder engagement, supporting government contracts.  

Background

The Fish Ecology Division at the NWFSC conducts scientific research on threatened and endangered salmon populations in the Pacific Northwest and California, including watershed assessments to aid in restoration planning and habitat monitoring to meet NMFS statutory obligations under the Endangered Species Act. NOAA requires support staff to collect and analyze habitat data in the Western Region, and develop and implement salmon life cycle models for restoration planning.  The analyses will focus on collection of habitat and/or fish data in river basins and nearshore waters of the Western Region, and assisting with habitat analyses, development and running salmon life cycle models. 

Tasks 

  • Assist with habitat analyses and development of life cycle models in NMFS Western Region
    1. Collect habitat and/or fish data via remote sensing or field methods,
    2. Analyze habitat data
    3. Develop salmon life cycle models in the Western Region. 
  • Write report sections and/or manuscripts for journal publication
    1. May lead author one or more manuscripts for journal publication.

Start Date: As soon as possible. 

Location: Montlake Laboratory, Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Seattle, WA

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position with benefits. Salary, commensurate with experience, between $33.00 - $38.00 per hour.

Requirements

Applicants must have the following minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university with a major directly related in a field of study as related to the requirements of specific task order with emphasis in fisheries, geology, natural science, hydrology or environmental sciences
  • Experience - Three (3) years of experience related to the task order, including 
  • Conducting quantitative and spatial analyses in R and ARC GIS 
  • Analysis of salmon habitat data
  • Development and use of salmon life cycle models
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting.
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement appropriate action.
